Norte Conectado at COP30: A Sustainable Connectivity Model Through Amazon Rivers

Norte Conectado at COP30: A Sustainability-Focused Initiative

During the much-anticipated COP30 event, the Entidade Administradora da Faixa (EAF) is set to introduce its innovative initiative, Norte Conectado, at Casa Brasil. This program emphasizes digital inclusion and sustainable infrastructure, pivotal topics in discussions about climate justice and development outcomes in the Amazon region. The initiative involves the installation of fiber optic cables along riverbeds to provide high-speed internet access to remote communities, carefully sidestepping deforestation and significant ecological disturbances that typically accompany traditional infrastructure development.

The estimated investment for the Norte Conectado initiative stands at an impressive R$ 1.6 billion. This funding is expected to benefit over 10 million individuals across six states in the Amazon Basin. The plan includes the deployment of around 12,000 kilometers of underground cable, which will connect over seventy communities. The resultant infrastructure aims to facilitate telemedicine, enhance educational opportunities, improve public services, and stimulate regional economic growth.

Leandro Guerra, the CEO of EAF, underscores the organization’s commitment to public policies that aumentar connectivity while conserving forests. He remarks, “Norte Conectado exemplifies our dedication to public policy that increases connectivity while simultaneously preserving the forest. By utilizing the natural river flows, the program offers an infrastructure with a lower environmental impact, aligning perfectly with COP30’s focus on sustainable development.”

At Casa Brasil, EAF plans to host three thematic panels aimed at exploring optical infrastructure, digital inclusion, and the transformative role of 5G technology in regional transformation. The sessions will welcome government officials, researchers, telecommunications specialists, and local organizations to foster collaborative discussions. An engaging podcast studio will also be set up to record interviews and exchanges centered on connectivity within the Amazon region.
