The JAPAN SUI COLLECTION Event Showcases Japan's Cultural Treasures in Kyoto

JAPAN SUI COLLECTION: A Celebration of Elegance and Tradition in Kyoto

On November 14-15, 2025, the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan held a remarkable event titled "JAPAN SUI COLLECTION in KYOTO" at the prestigious Kyoto State Guest House. This initiative aimed to showcase Japan's rich cultural heritage, featuring a blend of traditional crafts, exquisite cuisine, and captivating performances, ultimately introducing the essence of Japanese beauty to a global audience.

Event Overview

The impressive venue, Kyoto State Guest House, designed for foreign dignitaries, offers an elegant representation of Japan's historic architecture, seamlessly blending with Kyoto's scenic landscape. The event aimed to elevate lesser-known traditional crafts and culinary delicacies to international prominence.

Approximately 60 exhibits of traditional craftworks were displayed, under themes ranging from regional heritage and modern interpretation to contemporary design and artistic impact. Notable pieces included exquisite Wajima-nuri lacquerware, stunning Kutani-yaki pottery, and intricately crafted Hakata dolls. Attendees praised the meticulous craftsmanship and the use of natural materials that reflect Japan's strong regional identity.

The Culinary Experience

The event was not just about visual delights; it offered an unforgettable culinary journey. Guests savored dishes prepared by renowned Chef Hiroshi Nagashima, featuring premium ingredients such as Yamagata “wagyu” beef and Oma tuna. Each dish was carefully paired with selected sake, enhancing the experience of Japan's rich gastronomic culture.

Performances to Remember

The event did not lack on the entertainment front either. Attendees were treated to a striking fashion show by designer JUNKO KOSHINO that celebrated the fusion of traditional and contemporary styles. Additionally, a traditional “kyogen” comic theater performance delighted guests, providing insight into Japan's unique performing arts.

Tea Ceremony and Displays

One of the highlights was the tea ceremony, conducted by an instructor from the Mushakoji Senke school. Showcasing a selection of tea utensils, including the finely crafted Takayama Chasen whisks, the ceremony illustrated the beauty and precision synonymous with Japanese tea culture. Furthermore, beautiful ikebana floral arrangements and bamboo installations enriched the setting, highlighting Japan's exceptional craftsmanship.

Organizer's Vision

Masaya Kitao, a Councillor from the Cabinet Secretariat, expressed the vision behind the JAPAN SUI COLLECTION. He conveyed a strong desire to spotlight regional treasures while ensuring their preservation and evolution into contemporary contexts. "SUI" embodies the traditional aesthetics that Japan is known for, and through this collection, we aim to create new value while honoring these roots.
