Okayama University Hosts Symposium on Women's Leadership



On May 15, 2026, Okayama University organized a hybrid symposium dedicated to supporting the career development of female researchers, themed "Diversity Research Environment Realization Initiative (Women Leadership Development Type)". Approximately 110 participants, including faculty, students, and representatives from various organizations, attended the event, showcasing the university's commitment to diversity and inclusion within its academic environment.

The symposium commenced with opening remarks from President Yasunori Nasu and Ms. Keiko Aihara, Director of the Human Resource Policy Promotion Office at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. Following this, former Program Director of the Japan Science and Technology Agency, Ms. Yasuko Yamamura, delivered a keynote lecture titled "Developing Female Research Leaders as an Organizational Strategy." During her address, she highlighted international trends in diversity promotion, the current status in Japan, and various initiatives aimed at enhancing the presence of female researchers. Additionally, she expressed her expectations for Okayama University in this endeavor.

In a mid-term report presented by Professor Mayuri Inoue, Director of the Gender Equality Office, updates on the three-year progress of the initiative were shared. Professor Takashi Tamura, head of the Women’s Tenure Track (WTT) project, later reported on the initiative's achievements over the past 15 years and discussed future prospects. Faculty members detailed specific examples of support provided through various programs and the positive outcomes achieved.

The symposium also featured a panel discussion, moderated by Associate Professor Yuko Kataoka, who engaged representatives from the university’s planning, evaluation, general affairs department, as well as faculties of Science, Engineering, Education, and Law. The discussion focused on the theme of "Enhancing Universities through the Appointment of Women," addressing the results, innovations, and impacts of applying female faculty, as well as the challenges and barriers that still exist. The representatives shared insights into their current situations and future expectations, facilitating an active exchange of ideas and strategies.

In conclusion, former President of Okayama Prefectural University and current honorary professor of Okayama University, Ms. Yoko Oki, along with Ms. Yamamura, summarized the symposium, emphasizing the importance of continuing to foster an inclusive academic community.

Okayama University's Diversity Promotion Headquarters continues to aim for further advancement in diversity and inclusion through educational, research support, and human resource development initiatives.
