Hiroshima Electric Railway to Introduce WAON Payment System in 2026

Hiroshima Electric Railway's New WAON Payment Integration

Hiroshima Electric Railway Co., well-known for its efficient public transport services in Hiroshima, has teamed up with Transaction Media Networks (TMN) to enhance its ticketing system. Beginning July 1, 2026, users will be able to utilize the WAON electronic payment system in combination with existing transportation e-money solutions through the MOBIRY DAYS service. This initiative aims to simplify the boarding and alighting procedures, addressing past operational challenges while significantly improving user convenience.

Enhancing Public Transport Convenience

Given the ongoing challenges faced by public transportation providers across Japan, including a declining population and workforce shortages, the demand for more accessible and cost-efficient cashless payment systems has surged. In response, TMN, which has primarily offered cashless solutions to retail establishments like supermarkets and convenience stores, will now extend these capabilities to the public transportation sector. By leveraging its technology, TMN aims to drastically reduce operational costs associated with maintaining electronic money systems like MOBIRY DAYS, thus supporting the enhancement of regional public transport convenience.

As of the launch date, users will be able to utilize a variety of transportation e-money options including:
  • - ICOCA
  • - Kitaca
  • - PASMO
  • - Suica
  • - manaca
  • - TOICA
  • - はやかけん (Hayakaken)
  • - nimoca
  • - SUGOCA

Notably, PiTaPa will not be supported for this service. Additionally, for children or discount fares, it is advised to consult with the train crew prior to using the payment system.

Innovative Ticketing with MOBIRY DAYS

MOBIRY DAYS is a new cloud-based ticketing service designed to streamline the process of purchasing and charging commuter passes. Users can perform transactions through a smartphone app or website, allowing seamless navigation with a QR code or dedicated IC card for entry and exit.
