The Frescobol Japan Open 2026: A Unique Sporting Event in Akashi

The Japan Frescobol Association (JFBA) has officially announced the highly anticipated Frescobol Japan Open 2026, set to take place from September 19 to September 21 at the beautiful Okura Coast in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture. This championship event will determine Japan's representative pair for the upcoming international competitions, concluding the FRESCOBALL JAPAN TOUR 2026 series that began in February in Okinawa.

The Japan Tour comprises a total of eight tournaments aimed at selecting the top pairs to represent Japan in frescobol, a beach sport that combines travel, fun, and teamwork. Certainly, the final competition in Akashi will attract significant attention as it features two distinguished divisions: the CLASSIC Division, adhering to traditional rules, and the TOP Division, where a speed gun system will be utilized in accordance with international standards. Victors in the TOP Division will also secure spots for the Brazilian Championships set for December, emphasizing the event's high stakes.

As the title suggests, the model for this event is centered around the motto: “Traveling, Communication Design Sports.” This tagline reflects not only the competitive spirit but also the enjoyment of exploring the scenic beauty across Japan, ranging from Okinawa to Shonan, Awaji Island, Odaiba, Makinohara, Miyakonojo, and Rikuzentakata. Akashi, well-known for its pristine beach and as an emerging hub for beach sports, will serve as the fitting backdrop for this prestigious event.

What is Frescobol?

Originating from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1945 at Copacabana Beach, frescobol has evolved into a beloved global beach sport. Unlike traditional competitive sports, frescobol emphasizes collaboration between two players who score points by sustaining rallies rather than competing against each other. Players maintain a distance of 7 meters during the 5-minute match, making it a sport renowned for its cooperative nature, often referred to as a “sport of empathy.”

Looking toward the future, JFBA is actively working towards unifying international rules with the establishment of the first global organization, UAFI, in agreement with the Rio Frescobol Federation (FEFERJ). This initiative seeks to popularize a unique Japanese frescobol culture integrated with sports tourism, promoting year-round enjoyment of the sport.

Currently, JFBA boasts 29 officially recognized regional clubs and six registered student organizations across Japan, enhancing the sport's presence nationwide. With free admission to those wishing to witness the thrilling matches, this is certainly an event not to be missed. The local and international frescobol community eagerly anticipates the exhilarating atmosphere and camaraderie that this tournament will provide.
