I.W.G Inc. Raises $1.8 Million for Healthcare Data Interoperability in Asia

I.W.G Inc. Secures $1.8 Million in Funding for Healthcare Data Interoperability

On June 2, 2026, Tokyo-based I.W.G Inc., a company dedicated to resolving the interoperability issues in healthcare across Asia, has successfully raised $1.8 million in its Pre-Series A funding round. This investment was led by Golden Gate Ventures, with participation from Antler, an existing investor in the company.

This funding round marks the first investment by Golden Gate Ventures' fourth fund into Japan. Notably, Dr. Toshihiko Sato, an entrepreneur and physician who operates multiple medical institutions in Japan and is one of I.W.G's initial customers, also participated in this funding round.

The raised capital will be utilized to further accelerate the development of I.W.G's AI referral agents and its infrastructure for healthcare data interoperability while also expanding its presence in the Asian market, particularly in Japan.

Tackling the Major Infrastructure Challenge in Healthcare: Data Fragmentation

Currently, healthcare institutions across Asia are grappling with a significant challenge—data fragmentation resulting from legacy systems that hinder effective communication and collaboration. As a result, the exchange of referrals between medical institutions becomes cumbersome and delays the processes for overseas consultations or health screenings, consuming a lot of time in patient acceptance coordination. Although medical records exist, the barriers arise from varying formats, systems, and languages that each healthcare provider uses.

The global market for healthcare interoperability solutions is projected to grow from $3.9 billion in 2024 to $14.7 billion by 2034, with the Asia-Pacific region anticipated to be the fastest-growing area during this period. However, varying levels of digital maturity among many healthcare institutions present urgent challenges for data integration between systems, complicating AI implementations in the healthcare sector.

I.W.G’s Approach: An Interoperable Layer without System Replacement

I.W.G's platform enables seamless healthcare data sharing among hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, and medical partners without the need for complex hardware installations or costly custom developments. The platform supports multiple data formats, including PDF, XML, HL7, and DICOM.

Instead of relying solely on direct system integrations, I.W.G's AI referral agent comprehends the clinical context of received documents and automatically maps them to the required formats of the recipient healthcare institution. This ability allows both parties to continue using their existing systems while overcoming differences in formats, system inconsistencies, and language barriers.

Moreover, I.W.G is developing functionality that automatically cross-references information on referral documents with related clinical guidelines and protocols established by each medical institution. This development aims to significantly cut down the time physicians spend manually referencing guidelines and mitigate the risks of making decisions based on outdated information.

Currently, I.W.G collaborates with healthcare institutions, remote radiology diagnostics centers, medical tourism firms, and health screening facilities spanning Japan, China, Singapore, and Indonesia. There's a growing demand from premium insurance companies and credit card programs that support health screenings abroad, emphasizing the urgent need to eliminate delays caused by language barriers and incompatible systems.

Commentary from Stakeholders

Jussi Salovaara, Co-founder and Managing Partner of Antler for the Asia region:
"Many healthcare AI startups focus on developing applications atop existing systems. However, I.W.G aims to address a more fundamental issue: facilitating cooperation among fragmented healthcare systems. In the Asian market, where compatibility, language, and workflow differences create significant friction, the presence of this infrastructure layer is critical. I am thrilled that I.W.G's efforts, which are already showing results across Asia, are being recognized by global investors like Golden Gate Ventures."

Xiaoyan (Fiona) Zhou, Co-founder and CEO of I.W.G:
"Healthcare institutions are still spending enormous amounts of time converting data formats among disconnected systems. Our goal is to allow medical information to flow as easily and securely as information does online. We are committed to building an interoperable layer that enables institutions and partners to collaborate frictionlessly, regardless of their existing systems or locations."

Justin Hall, Partner at Golden Gate Ventures:
"The reason we were drawn to I.W.G is simple. Fiona and Bruce have already paved this path once successfully. They have a track record of scaling healthcare AI companies in some of the most regulated markets in Asia. A team with such practical operational experience and deep insights is truly rare. Also, the high retention rates demonstrated by initial customers prove that the technology they are developing addresses real challenges in the highly complex area of medical IT."

Dr. Toshihiko Sato, Chairman of NIDC and Physician:
"Healthcare involves an information industry where patients’ various vital data, test results, and surgical findings need to be organized and assessed in various formats and chronological order. Comprehensive judgment based on this data is essential, and I.W.G’s DOCloud and AI Referral provide the optimal cloud-based platform. Given the rising number of cyberattacks targeting healthcare institutions, backing up vast amounts of data while using this summary will significantly reduce archiving costs, benefiting operational management in healthcare. Sharing medical data across multiple professions is essential, and it helps technicians and nurses in organizing pre-test information for proper care. I hope I.W.G continues to grow into a global infrastructure for medical network collaboration."

A Founding Team Well-versed in Asia's Healthcare AI

I.W.G was founded in 2016 by Fiona (Xiaoyan) Zhou and Bruce (Xiaoxi) Guo, who have built a strong track record in the healthcare AI sector.

Prior to founding I.W.G, Zhou led international operations for a medical imaging AI startup based in China, overseeing everything from initial development using deep learning for diagnostic technologies to the introduction of these technologies into actual hospitals. Under her leadership, the team advanced clinical introduction protocols, partnerships with hospitals, and regulatory compliance across various Asian markets. They achieved key milestones in the Asia health tech industry by securing initial market access for foreign AI diagnostic solutions in Japan, among other accomplishments. The founding members were instrumental in scaling a startup from its early stages to a public unicorn.

I.W.G is also a graduate of the Mayo Clinic Platform_Accelerate, a startup support program from the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, and continues to improve and expand its AI solutions while collaborating with global healthcare leaders.

The funds raised will be allocated toward expanding engineering and business development teams, strengthening collaborations with healthcare institutions, and enhancing AI functionalities aimed at automating workflows and multilingual interoperability in healthcare data sharing.
