Kolmar Korea Selected for Government-Backed AI Factory Initiative Supporting Innovation in Cosmetic Manufacturing

Kolmar Korea: Leading the Charge in AI-Driven Cosmetic Manufacturing

On October 27, 2025, Kolmar Korea announced a significant achievement: it has been selected as the only cosmetic company to spearhead the government-funded AI Factory project, organized by South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIR). This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and innovation in the production of Korean cosmetics through advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The Vision Behind AI Factory Initiative

The South Korean government is pursuing a bold vision to become a leading global manufacturing powerhouse by 2030. The AI Factory Alliance is a cornerstone of this vision, meant to drive collaboration and innovation across various industries. By choosing Kolmar Korea, a recognized leader in the cosmetic sector, the government underscores the importance of technological excellence in enhancing industrial capabilities.

Enhancing Manufacturing through AI

Kolmar Korea plans to establish an autonomous manufacturing system that integrates all cosmetic production processes—from planning and formulation to quality control and packaging. Unlike traditional 'smart factories' that rely heavily on human input, AI-driven factories will utilize real-time data analysis to autonomously optimize production operations. This shift is expected to revolutionize how cosmetics are produced, allowing for increased responsiveness to customer demands and minimizing production errors.

Goals and Key Initiatives

The project will span over four years, from September 2025 to December 2029, with Kolmar Korea at the helm as the leading member of the AI Factory Alliance. The key initiatives of this program include:
1. Creation of an Integrated Data Platform: This platform will connect all processes involved in cosmetic production, enhancing collaboration and workflow efficiency.
2. Development of Autonomous Process Control Models: By employing AI, Kolmar Korea aims to improve product quality and production accuracy significantly, targeting a process accuracy of over 95%—one of the highest standards in the industry.

As global demand for customization and rapid production rises, the reliance on AI technology in the manufacturing process is becoming essential for maintaining competitiveness. Many existing processes in the cosmetic industry still heavily depend on manual labor, especially regarding custom product designs and packaging. Kolmar Korea intends to share its successes and challenges encountered during the AI Factory implementation to accelerate digital transformation within Korea's cosmetics manufacturing ecosystem.

Building on Existing Success

Prior to this initiative, Kolmar Korea laid the groundwork for AI-based manufacturing with its intelligent factory system introduced in 2019, which successfully reduced defect rates by 42%. The AI Factory project will build on this foundation and create a new generation of manufacturing systems designed for flexible, small-batch production.

A Commitment to the Future

A representative from Kolmar Korea emphasized the significance of being recognized as the only cosmetic company invited to participate in this governmental project. This recognition is a testament to the company's leadership in AI-supported manufacturing. The autonomous AI systems developed through this initiative are expected to elevate standards and fortify the global competitiveness of South Korean cosmetic brands.

Moreover, Kolmar Korea operates manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Canada, and China, with plans to implement these new AI systems across all its global sites. The company also aims to expand the application of AI Factory technology to other subsidiaries within the Kolmar Group, including Kolmar BNH (nutritional supplements), HK inno.N (medicines), and Yonwoo (cosmetic packaging).

In an ever-evolving industry, Kolmar Korea’s commitment to innovation through this initiative signals a promising future for Korean cosmetics on the global stage. With its focus squarely on AI-driven enhancements, the company is poised to lead the transformation of cosmetic manufacturing into a faster, more efficient, and highly responsive industry.
