Salt Lake City School District Leverages AI for Student Attendance
In a groundbreaking move, Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) has teamed up with Edia Learning, Inc. to introduce an innovative AI-driven attendance solution. This multi-year partnership is set to transform how attendance is monitored and reported, with a goal to halve chronic absenteeism from 28% to just 10% by 2029.
Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, has been identified as a significant predictor of long-term academic challenges. It particularly affects urban districts with diverse and multilingual populations. Within Salt Lake City, over 18,000 students are enrolled, with 59% being students of color and 48% classified as economically disadvantaged. The challenge is accentuated as over 80 languages are spoken within the community, making attendance management a complex issue. Last year alone saw 29% of SLCSD students classified as chronically absent, equating to nearly a full month of instructional time lost.
Meeting Families Where They Are
Edia Learning stands out as a leading provider of AI-powered attendance solutions. Unlike traditional methods that often rely on one-way notifications, Edia utilizes an interactive two-way conversation approach with families via SMS. This innovative platform automatically detects and communicates in each family's preferred language, supporting more than 100 languages, including Spanish, Swahili, Karen, and Chinese. When a parent responds in their native language, their messages are instantly translated to English for staff awareness, ensuring that no family feels unheard.
Superintendent Elizabeth Grant expressed the district's commitment to bridging the learning gap by stating, "Every day a student is absent is a day of learning we can't get back. Our partnership with Edia is about closing that gap, not simply through letters or robocalls, but by fostering genuine conversations that help us understand family needs and act swiftly."
In the event of an absence, the Edia platform promptly engages with families, gathering the reasons behind each absence. If responses highlight deeper issues—such as transportation difficulties, emotional challenges, or family emergencies—the system flags these matters for appropriate staff intervention. The shared dashboard provides a comprehensive view for counselors, administrators, and teachers, who can address the specific needs of students effectively.
Joe Philleo, CEO of Edia, praised SLCSD's approach to engaging families, stating, "The commitment demonstrated by SLCSD aligns perfectly with the vision behind Edia. We are thrilled to support their mission and contribute to fostering better educational outcomes."
