Experience the Breathtaking Tatra Ice Dome
Slovakia warmly invites visitors to explore the spectacular Tatra Ice Dome, officially inaugurated for the winter season in the High Tatras. This stunning ice structure, a hallmark of the region, showcases an extraordinary display of craftsmanship, light, and frozen architecture.
The 13th edition of this remarkable project is dedicated to the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome, celebrated as the “mother and head” of all churches in the capital of Italy and worldwide. Its unveiling in ice form symbolically marks the commencement of the winter season in the Tatras, creating an enchanting atmosphere for all who visit.
Slovakia’s national tourism organization, SLOVAKIA TRAVEL, emphasizes that the Tatra Ice Dome attracts both domestic and international visitors. The breathtaking beauty of the Tatras combined with excellent skiing opportunities positions this location as a prime winter holiday destination.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the dome's magical ambiance until April 19, 2026, with free admission. Located on Hrebienok, the dome is accessible via a short hike or by taking the Starý Smokovec funicular.
This year’s ice structure honors two significant popes: Pope Francis, who passed away in 2025, and his successor, Pope Leo XIV. The remarkable portraits of six popes are creatively represented within the dome. Beyond the stunning replica of the Basilica façade, guests can also admire the Holy Door and the papal throne, adding to the dome’s captivating allure.
The architectural design of the dome was masterfully crafted by sculptor Adam Bakoš, who dedicated 25 days to working alongside twenty sculptors from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany. In total, the installation comprises 225 tons of ice and 1,800 ice blocks, reflecting the incredible artistry involved in this winter spectacle.
