In a significant move towards enhancing national defense capabilities, Raytheon, a business unit of RTX, has pledged $100 million to augment its production facility located in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This initiative aims to ramp up the testing processes of the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) while also increasing the production capabilities for crucial components of the Patriot® missile system.

The announcement comes on the heels of a burgeoning global demand for advanced missile defense systems, prompting Raytheon to expand its operational capacity. According to Tom Laliberty, president of Land & Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, the investment marks a pivotal step in ensuring that both the U.S. Army and international partners can access crucial defense technologies more swiftly. He stated, "This investment strengthens our ability to deliver critical air and missile defense capabilities to customers around the world."

The expanded facility in Portsmouth is expected to create around 150 high-tech jobs for the local economy, reflecting Raytheon's ongoing commitment to contributing to the region while also bolstering national security. This milestone also follows a previous $53 million expansion of Raytheon’s Radar Production Facility in Andover, Massachusetts, demonstrating a proactive approach to tackling emerging threats in air and missile defense.

The LTAMDS radar system is specially designed to counteract advanced threats, including hypersonic weapons, showcasing Raytheon's innovation and commitment to staying ahead in defense technology. Currently, Raytheon is under contract for multiple LTAMDS radars for the U.S. Army and Poland, with the program recently completing its successful ninth flight test, successfully tracking and intercepting a target.

One of the critical components of Raytheon's defense arsenal is the Patriot Advanced Capability-2 (PAC-2) Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical (GEM-T). This missile is crucial for intercepting various airborne threats, including tactical ballistic missiles, and is a cornerstone of the highly regarded Patriot missile defense system.

Raytheon's Portsmouth facility has played a vital role in fostering undersea technology, combat systems, and radar developments for over six decades, currently employing more than 850 people. The investment aims not only to enhance production but also to affirm Raytheon's longstanding legacy in driving technological advancement and security solutions.
