Nokia's Strategic Cloud Collaboration with atNorth
In a significant move to enhance its cloud services, Nokia has announced a partnership with atNorth, a leading Nordic provider specializing in colocation, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence services. This collaboration, which encompasses a multi-megawatt deployment at atNorth's FIN02 data center in Helsinki, marks a pivotal step for Nokia in its quest to bolster its cloud infrastructure in Finland.
The contract is structured over a 12-year period, with the possibility of extending to a total capacity of over 10 megawatts. Malaysia, known for its stringent environmental policies, is taking proactive measures to ensure that Nokia's operations in the country align with its commitment to sustainability. Nokia has consistently ranked as the most sustainable telecommunications and communications company globally, underlining its dedication to minimizing environmental impact while optimizing operational efficiency.
Nokia is not new to the Nordic region's data center landscape. It has previously utilized data centers in Finland, taking advantage of the country's naturally cool climate and renewable energy resources, which are essential for sustaining its workloads. The decision to partner with atNorth stems from a prolonged relationship between the two companies, characterized by the use of Nokia’s data center switches to enhance atNorth's high-performance computing as a service (HPCaaS) offerings.
Recognizing the rapidly evolving demands of data center operations, Nokia was on the lookout for a partner capable of meeting its high-density infrastructure needs without sacrificing environmental integrity. The specifications required included the capacity for high-density workloads exceeding 130 kilowatts per rack, with a focus on availability and scalability for future demands.
Located in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, atNorth's FIN02 facility operates entirely on renewable energy, featuring advanced power and liquid cooling systems designed for high-performance workloads. Its modular design not only supports scalability but also integrates waste heat recycling systems in collaboration with Kesko Corporation, aimed at heating nearby commercial spaces and further reducing its carbon footprint.
Marika Mentula, Vice President for Network Infrastructure, North Europe at Nokia, stated, "atNorth was able to meet our complex technical requirements rapidly without compromising on our sustainability goals. Their support for our cloud infrastructure at FIN02 allows us to provide high-performance infrastructure that meets the needs of our most demanding applications."
Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, emphasized the growing need for sustainable and scalable data center solutions, reaffirming the value of their long-standing partnership with Nokia. He highlighted, "As the data center industry continues to expand at an unprecedented rate, companies are increasingly searching for comprehensive solutions that combine sustainability, security, and rapid scalability. Our collaboration with Nokia embodies this ethos and contributes to our list of distinguished clients that trust atNorth with their mission-critical data."
This announcement follows atNorth's recent heat reuse initiative, further illustrating its commitment to sustainability through innovative collaborations. At present, the company operates two other metropolitan sites in proximity to Helsinki and is actively developing a fourth major site in Kouvola, projected to be operational by late 2025.
About atNorth
AtNorth is a front-runner in Nordic data center services, sacrificing neither cost-effectiveness nor scalability. All of atNorth’s data centers leverage renewable energy sources and are deeply committed to the principles of a circular economy. Factors such as innovative design, operational efficiency, and smart technology are integrated into all their sites to ensure an efficient, long-term infrastructure solution. Headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland, atNorth operates eight data centers across strategic locations in the Nordics and is set to expand further with new sites planned in Denmark and Finland.
