Hyundai Strengthens Community Ties in Western Massachusetts
Hyundai Motor America has made significant strides in supporting the Western Massachusetts community by investing in STEM education programs and addressing food insecurity concerns. The company recently hosted an engaging event at the Greater Holyoke YMCA, where more than 40 students took part in the SAE International's A World In Motion (AWIM) JetToy Challenge. This event not only focused on hands-on STEM learning but also aimed to inspire creativity and critical thinking among young participants.
During the JetToy Challenge, students were tasked with building balloon-powered vehicles, which introduced them to critical concepts in design engineering and vehicular motion. This initiative is part of Hyundai’s larger commitment to enhance educational opportunities in STEM fields for youth across the United States.
Brandon Ramirez, the director of corporate social responsibility for Hyundai Motor North America, emphasized the significance of these programs: "Supporting education and health initiatives is an important part of our efforts. Through Hyundai Hope, we are increasing access to hands-on STEM education and directly supporting food security by helping provide 30,000 meals to communities across Western Massachusetts."
In addition to its focus on education, Hyundai has also turned its attention to combating food insecurity in the area. The company made generous donations to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts and the Thrive Center Food Pantry at Holyoke Community College (HCC). These contributions represent a vital step in ensuring that individuals and families struggling with food insecurity receive the support they need.
The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts plays a crucial role in the community, sourcing and distributing nearly 18 million pounds of food each year. Hyundai’s recent donation specifically aims to provide 30,000 nutritious meals, reinforcing their role as a community partner dedicated to alleviating hunger.
HCC's Thrive Center Food Pantry also greatly benefits from Hyundai’s investment, supplying students with food and other essential items. Highlighting the importance of this support, HCC’s programs have distributed over 19,171 pounds of food in the current academic year alone, assisting students who face challenges in meeting basic needs while pursuing their education.
Gary Rome, president of the Gary Rome Auto Group, participated in the JetToy Challenge, interacting with students as they showcased their innovative vehicle designs. His involvement underscores the collaborative spirit of the event, which aligns with community engagement and shared learning experiences.
“STEM education isn't only about technology, coding, and robotics,” noted Conor Bevan, CEO of the Greater Holyoke YMCA. “Youth who receive STEM experiences are better prepared to face real-world problems with more creativity, critical thinking, and effectiveness. Thanks to Hyundai Motor America, this SAE AWIM JetToy STEM activity will help combat summer learning loss, bridge the gap between school years, and build essential problem-solving skills in a relaxed environment.”
Hyundai has consistently demonstrated its commitment to community welfare through initiatives like Hyundai Hope, which seeks to improve societal well-being and promote sustainable growth. The program dedicates resources to nonprofit organizations aimed at fostering health, safety, and education in communities across the country.
Since 2021, Hyundai's total contributions to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts and HCC’s Thrive Center Food Pantry have exceeded $85,000, showcasing their dedication to social responsibility and responsiveness to local needs.
With plans to further invest in community initiatives, Hyundai aims to sustain its efforts in empowering education and ensuring food security. As the company prepares for future expansions and investments, including $26 billion in the United States from 2025 to 2028, its focus on community impact remains steadfast.
