Carnival Corporation Grows Its Maritime Cadet Program in Mexico to Foster Future Maritime Talent

Expanding Horizons: Carnival Corporation's Commitment to Maritime Education in Mexico

Carnival Corporation & plc, globally known as the largest cruise operator, has officially broadened its maritime cadet apprenticeship program. This program, established in partnership with Marítima Port University of Mexico, aims to provide essential onboard training opportunities for aspiring maritime students. The new measures were announced at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference, demonstrating the commitment to bolstering the maritime workforce in Mexico.

The Signing Event

The event featured several dignitaries including Domenico Rognoni, senior vice president of fleet governance and nautical operations from Carnival Cruise Line, and Emiel de Vries, vice president of marine and port operations for Princess Cruises. The presence of Captain Mauricio Cruz Reyes, rector and director general of Marítima Port University, further emphasized the importance of this collaboration. Additionally, Admiral Gerardo de Jesús Toledo Guzmán was present to observe the signing alongside the consul general of Mexico in Miami, Rutilio Cruz Escandón Cadenas, marking a significant step in educational partnerships.

The signing of this addendum reinforces a previously established agreement launched in May 2024, which allowed eligible final-year students to undertake a 180-day mandatory apprenticeship as part of their academic training. This initiative connects theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience, preparing students for future careers in the maritime industry.

Significance of the Program

"Mexico is a longstanding and important partner to Carnival Corporation, and expanding this program to include Princess Cruises reflects our continued commitment to strengthening maritime workforce development," said Rognoni. This sentiment captures the essence of the program's significance—not only for the students, but for the country's maritime sector as a whole.

Emiel de Vries also highlighted the importance of experiential learning, stating, "Expanding this program to include Princess Cruises creates meaningful opportunities for Mexican cadets to gain valuable experience in a dynamic operating environment." This approach aims to shape a future generation of maritime professionals who will thrive in the complex and evolving maritime landscape.

A Bright Future for Mexican Cadets

Since the inception of the program, most participating students have transitioned into full cadet roles within Carnival Cruise Line. This success exemplifies the program's effectiveness in preparing the next wave of maritime experts equipped with practical training and operational expertise. The first set of cadets from Marítima Port University is expected to join Princess Cruises by the fall, marking another milestone in the ongoing commitment to nurturing talent within this industry.

Captain Mauricio Cruz Reyes expressed optimism about the program, stating, "This addendum strengthens collaboration that helps more students align academic preparation with hands-on experience at sea." By expanding access to these opportunities, the initiative supports the ongoing development of skilled maritime personnel in Mexico.

Carnival Corporation’s Vision

Carnival Corporation continues to explore ways to integrate workforce development with educational partnerships globally, emphasizing its role in creating sustainable job opportunities. The expansion of this program demonstrates an investment not only in education but also in fostering long-term relationships with local institutions to support national maritime sectors.

The company seeks to further engage with leaders in the Mexican port and maritime environment to address vital matters such as environmental compliance and security, ensuring that future maritime professionals are prepared to navigate these challenges responsibly.

With ongoing collaboration and a commitment to practical training, Carnival Corporation is set on a path to strengthening its ties with Mexico and shaping the future of the maritime industry through its dedicated apprenticeship program. As the cruise line prepares to welcome a new cohort of cadets, the foundation laid by this initiative represents a significant step toward a vibrant and skilled maritime workforce.
