Baja California Sur Introduces EMBRACE IT to Foster Sustainable Tourism Development

Baja California Sur Introduces EMBRACE IT Initiative

Baja California Sur, a state in Mexico renowned for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, is set to implement a groundbreaking initiative known as EMBRACE IT. This new strategy aims to bolster sustainable tourism development through the introduction of a tax affecting foreign visitors. Effective June 30, 2025, all international travelers staying for more than 24 hours will be required to pay a fee of $470 MXN (approximately $25 USD) per person. The tax is intended to generate funds for various projects that enhance environmental protection, community development, and local tourism infrastructure.

The EMERGE IT Tax Explained

The EMBRACE IT tax will be collected solely through online transactions, facilitating a streamlined process for travelers using the Travelkore platform. Visitors must present their payment confirmation upon entering and exiting the state at designated checkpoints, including airports in Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Loreto.

Mtra. Bertha Montaño Cota, the Minister of Finance and Administration in Baja California Sur, expressed the initiative's objectives. “Our goal is to provide an unforgettable tourism experience while safeguarding our ecosystems and supporting local community welfare. EMBRACE IT serves as a critical tool to accomplish this mission,” she stated.

Allocation of Funds

The revenue generated from this tax will be specifically allocated towards:
  • - Environmental Protection: Initiatives aimed at preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of Baja California Sur.
  • - Infrastructure Improvement: Upgrading existing tourist facilities and developing new infrastructures to enhance the travel experience.
  • - Social and Cultural Projects: Supporting local cultural initiatives and communities to promote sustainable tourism practices.

The initiative's guidelines are detailed in Article 129 Bis of Baja California Sur's financial legislation and further expounded in Sections IV-VII of the general regulations concerning tax payment mechanisms. The tax collection will be executed in collaboration with Tourist Tax México S.A. de C.V. (TTMX), leveraging Travelkore's advanced Software as a Service (SaaS) technology.

The Bigger Picture

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the state government to create a tourist environment that prioritizes sustainability. Baja California Sur has been a popular destination for travelers seeking natural beauty and rich cultural experiences. However, like many tourist-heavy regions, it faces challenges linked to environmental degradation and community equity. The introduction of the EMBRACE IT tax is a major step toward reinforcing the state's commitment to sustainable tourism.

With detailed management and transparency, the EMBRACE IT initiative aims to redefine how tourism interacts with local communities and the environment, enhancing both the visitor experience and the quality of life for local residents.

As Baja California Sur pursues this innovative approach, it sets an example for other regions grappling with similar challenges, demonstrating that tourism can be both a source of revenue and a means of environmental stewardship.

In conclusion, as travelers prepare for their journeys to picturesque Baja California Sur, they can take pride in contributing to sustainable practices that protect the very ecosystems they come to enjoy. The EMBRACE IT initiative promises not only to enrich the local landscape but also to provide a lasting legacy for generations to come.
