Braskem and Rockwell Automation: Strengthening Cybersecurity in Industrial Operations
In a rapidly changing digital landscape,
Braskem, the largest producer of polyolefins in the Americas, has taken significant steps to bolster its cybersecurity framework. Partnering with
Rockwell Automation, a leader in industrial automation, Braskem is utilizing the
SecureOT™ Platform to gain comprehensive real-time insights into its operational technology (OT) assets across its extensive network of over 39 global facilities.
The shift to prioritize cybersecurity in manufacturing has risen sharply. According to Rockwell's recent State of Smart Manufacturing report, cybersecurity has emerged as a pivotal operational concern, ranking as the second most critical external risk faced by manufacturers today. This shift in emphasis reflects the increasing integration of IT and OT systems and the accompanied vulnerabilities. Braskem understands this challenge, particularly as they operate in diverse regions with a variation of technologies and vendors. To navigate this complex environment, it is crucial to establish a unified, real-time overview of OT assets, which allows for better-informed decision-making and effective risk management.
"One of the most considerable challenges in OT cybersecurity is being aware of what exactly is connected to your network and where the risks lie," explains Arron Nelson, a specialist in industrial cybersecurity infrastructure at Braskem. With the ever-evolving nature of cyber threats — many of which utilize advanced methodologies like AI — gaining enhanced visibility is essential for organizations to make wise cybersecurity decisions. The SecureOT platform not only provides Braskem with a deeper understanding of its OT assets, but it also enables them to take proactive measures in securing their critical operations.
Since adopting the SecureOT Platform, Braskem has already reported notable advancements in operational risk management. The platform assists in maintaining an updated inventory of assets across all OT environments, in addition to accelerating the prioritization of vulnerability remediation and streamlining compliance demonstrations during audits. Within just eight months, the SecureOT Platform has successfully been implemented across 39 global facilities, mapping and cataloging over 3,000 assets and achieving essential readiness metrics such as 100% project preparation and 95% infrastructure readiness.
Rick Kaun, Global Director of Cybersecurity Services at Rockwell Automation emphasized, "Today's industrial operators cannot protect what they can't see. Organizations like Braskem are leveraging the SecureOT Platform as a comprehensive, asset-centric inventory that eliminates outdated or inaccurate methods of OT asset documentation. By automating visibility while encompassing asset insights, vulnerability management, and managed detection services within one vendor-agnostic system, we empower clients to understand and mitigate risks, thereby maintaining operational continuity and fostering sustainable, resilient operations."
