Shanghai Electric Achieves Milestone with World-record Biomethanol Bunkering Operation
Shanghai Electric Achieves Milestone in Biomethanol Bunkering
On August 17, Shanghai Electric Company, in collaboration with the Shanghai International Port Group and CMA CGM Group, made history by executing the largest single biomethanol bunkering operation ever recorded, totaling 8,000 metric tons. This significant event took place at the prestigious Yangshan Port and was aptly named "Green Fueled Globe, Lead the Future."
The primary supplier of this biomethanol was Shanghai Electric’s innovative Taonan green methanol project, which has proven its capability to support stable production and large-scale deliveries. The successful execution of this operation is a remarkable breakthrough not only in supply volume but also in establishing a fully integrated green fuel supply chain across provinces.
At the Shanghai International Shipping Green Fuel Sustainable Development Conference held on June 30, a groundbreaking agreement was reached among the provinces of Shanghai, Jilin, and Liaoning to launch a green-fuel transportation corridor. This initiative allows for an efficient north-to-south shipping route for methanol, originating from the Taonan project in Jilin, moving through Dalian Port for storage, and ultimately culminating in bunkering operations at Shanghai Port.
The Taonan facility stands out as the world’s first large-scale biomethanol production plant that harnesses green electricity alongside biomass feedstock. By utilizing Jilin's abundant renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, Shanghai Electric has constructed this feature-rich plant that meets the demands of the International Shipping Center in Shanghai, providing crucial support for the development of major green fuel centers catering to international shipping.
Looking forward, Shanghai Electric is committed to enhancing its industrial capabilities by focusing on the full cycle of green fuel production, from manufacturing and storage to transportation and application. The company is dedicated to advancing core technologies while continuing to upgrade its integrated green fuel solutions.
In addition, Shanghai Electric is pushing boundaries with its Green-Methanol and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project, known as Taonan Phase-II, which is designed to couple green hydrogen with biomass gasification. This initiative signifies the company’s commitment to improving its large-scale green fuel supply capacity, particularly for the aviation and maritime sectors.
Furthermore, Shanghai Electric aims to play a pivotal role in supporting China’s dual carbon goals and facilitating the global transition to low-carbon and clean energy solutions. The recent accomplishments in biomethanol bunkering not only highlight the company’s innovative capabilities but also contribute significantly to the sustainability efforts needed in today’s fast-evolving energy landscape.
In conclusion, as Shanghai Electric continues to strengthen its partnerships and develop pioneering solutions, it remains steadfast in its mission to lead the way in green energy initiatives. By combining innovative technologies with sustainable practices, the company sets a standard for others to follow in the energy sector and beyond.
