Swarm Defense Technologies Secures Major Drone Order

Swarm Defense Technologies, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, has achieved a significant milestone by receiving a prototype delivery order for 4,000 Kiwi attack drones as part of the Department of War's Drone Dominance Program. This order, valued at a minimum of $25 million, underscores the growing importance of drone technology in modern combat operations.

The Kiwi drones, designed for one-way attack missions, were tested by military operators at the Gauntlet II evaluation conducted at Fort Carson, Colorado. In these unscripted mission scenarios, various aircraft competed, but the Kiwi stood out due to its innovative design and operational capabilities. Swarm Defense plans to manufacture these drones at its 40,000-square-foot facility in Auburn Hills, where established drone production processes are combined with advanced software that allows a single operator to control multiple drones at once.

Kyle Dorosz, CEO of Swarm Defense Technologies, expressed pride in this achievement, noting, "Receiving an order for 4,000 Kiwi aircraft is a major milestone for Swarm Defense. The Drone Dominance Program has placed its confidence in both our aircraft and our ability to deliver them at scale." This order is seen as a testament to the hard work and innovation of Swarm Defense's engineering and production teams, who have engaged in continuous testing and improvement to meet the rigorous demands of military applications.

The Kiwi drone leverages technology from Swarm Defense’s parent company, Firefly Drone Shows, which produces the largest light-show drones in the United States. Since its inception in 2017, Firefly has been at the forefront of developing swarming technology, successfully creating over 20,000 swarming drones. Swarm Defense utilizes shared resources from Firefly to enhance its engineering and manufacturing processes.

The robust engineering behind the Kiwi includes capabilities for integrating electronics engineering, aircraft design, and proprietary software. Swarm Defense manufactures critical components in-house, which encompasses everything from flight controllers and power management systems to ground control software. The company’s Strike Deck ground control software allows one operator to control a swarm of drones, significantly increasing operational efficiency compared to traditional methods. This innovative software automates waypoint navigation and manages flight paths in real-time, allowing for the simultaneous control of multiple drones with minimal cognitive load.

Adam Wright, President of Swarm Defense Technologies and a former Navy SEAL, highlighted the operational advantages of the Kiwi drone, stating, "Combat units need to bring volume to the fight. Swarming allows a single pilot to accomplish what it normally takes several pilots to do. The Kiwi breaks the math of drone warfare. It’s so simple that anyone can learn to fly five of them simultaneously after only a few hours of training. We’re reducing manpower, cognitive load, and training requirements all at the same time."

The Kiwi drone isn't limited to one-way attack missions; it can also be configured for intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance tasks, and as an airborne communications relay. Additionally, it serves as a reusable precision-dropper, showcasing its versatility in different mission profiles.

In parallel to this order, Swarm Defense has a Phase I prototype agreement with the Defense Innovation Unit for the Containerized Autonomous Drone Delivery System project. This project aims to create a deployment system for drones that allows them to remain dormant until needed, controlled from a remote station by a single operator.
