KIC Ventures Launches VertiFix - A Revolutionary Solution for Safe Removal of Interspinous Implants
KIC Ventures, a pioneer and leader in minimally invasive spine surgeries, has made a significant leap forward in interventional pain management with the launch of VertiFix. This groundbreaking technology is specifically engineered to overcome the major challenge faced by physicians in safely removing interspinous process implants, such as the widely used Vertiflex Superion, while ensuring that the spinous processes remain intact.
The development comes in response to the growing incidence of complications associated with interspinous process devices. According to health professionals, the rise in issues can be traced back to various causes, including improper placements, incorrect patient selection, and the natural progression of spinal disease. As a result, many devices now face recalls, leaving patients in need of urgent revisions.
Dr. Kingsley R. Chin, CEO and founder of KIC Ventures, identified the problems firsthand during a surgical case where a physician struggled for over two hours to extract a Vertiflex implant to facilitate a revision. The procedure, aimed at implanting InSpan, faced an unfortunate termination as the device proved impossible to remove without risking serious anatomical injury — a grim scenario that underscores the urgent need for a viable solution.
In light of this pressing demand, KIC Ventures implemented educational initiatives for physicians, promoting the InSpan instrumentation system which was designed to delicately navigate around existing interspinous implants, allowing for their removal with minimal disruption. Consequently, these successes catalyzed a deeper engineering exploration, culminating in the creation of VertiFix—a solution developed with extensive collaboration among leading spine surgeons and interventional pain management physicians, including Dr. Luis Fandos and Dr. Jonathan Daitch, alongside engineering lead Vito Lore.
VertiFix introduces a novel patented approach that effectively reverses the mechanical steps initially used for interspinous device insertion. It provides physicians with a reliable and controlled method to dissect around the implants, reverse their deployment mechanisms, and safely extract them without damaging the vital spinous processes. Following the removal, stabilization can be promptly restored using the InSpan system.
KIC Ventures has validated the efficacy of VertiFix through multiple successful removals in clinical scenarios, with supportive findings evident in cadaver testing. Early results highlight its ability to conserve spinal anatomy and reduce unnecessary major surgeries, ensuring that revisions can still be managed within the scope of minimally invasive outpatient procedures.
Given the recent recall of the Vertiflex device by Boston Scientific, many patients who have undergone implantation are now in an essential phase of evaluation and potential revision. VertiFix emerges as the first and only specialized system tailored to meet this evolving need.
"Our commitment is to support both physicians and patients throughout this transition period. With VertiFix, we empower interventional pain management doctors, orthopedic, and neurosurgeons to execute the safe removal of Vertiflex implants while preserving the fundamental anatomy of the spine," asserts Dr. Erik Spayde, the Chief Technology Officer at KIC Ventures and a Harvard-trained orthopedic spine surgeon.
KIC Ventures continues to uphold its mission of innovating methods for anatomy-sparing outpatient spine surgeries through its dedicated subsidiary, NANISX. Their efforts revolve around bringing the principles of LESS Exposure Spine Surgery (LESS™) to the forefront, allowing physicians to address patient needs earlier, ideally before substantial reconstructive surgery becomes necessary.
