Faith Leaders Organize for No Menthol Sunday



On May 18, 2025, a significant nationwide effort called No Menthol Sunday unfolds, led by the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC) and various faith-based organizations. This initiative targets the ongoing health crisis provoked by menthol cigarettes, especially in the African American community. The harmful effects of menthol cigarette consumption have been prevalent for decades, resulting in an increased number of addiction cases and a higher mortality rate due to tobacco-related diseases.

Menthol cigarettes are notoriously favored among African American smokers, with a staggering 85% relying on them compared to only 29% of White smokers. This disparity highlights the disproportionate impact of tobacco marketing targeted at Black communities. Each year, over 72,000 African Americans are diagnosed with smoking-related illnesses, and around 45,000 succumb to tobacco-induced diseases.
