American Liver Foundation's Advocacy Summit Recognizes Congressional Champions for Liver Health

American Liver Foundation's Advocacy Summit Celebrates Congressional Leadership

On April 21st and 22nd, the American Liver Foundation (ALF) hosted its annual Liver Life Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. This event served as a fruitful gathering point for patients, caregivers, and families who are united in championing the needs of people affected by liver disease across the United States. The summit focused on raising awareness and pushing for legislative priorities to support the approximately 100 million Americans impacted by liver health issues.

A significant highlight of the summit was the presentation of the Congressional Champion Award to two distinguished members of Congress: Jim Costa (D-CA) and Don Bacon (R-NE). This recognition was a testament to their unwavering commitment to enhancing policies for liver disease patients and their families. Lorraine Stiehl, CEO of ALF, expressed sincere gratitude towards both lawmakers, emphasizing the importance of their support in addressing the needs of liver health advocates.

Recognition of Congressman Jim Costa

Congressman Costa was honored for his advocacy efforts, particularly his introduction of the Ian Kalvinskas Pediatric Liver Cancer Early Detection and Screening Act. This critical piece of legislation focuses on improving the early detection and treatment of pediatric liver tumors. It directs the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to study the landscape of pediatric liver health and improve access to information for families regarding early warning signs of liver diseases.

The poignant presentation of this award was made by Adrian Kalvinskas and Susan Hickman, the parents of the late Ian Kalvinskas, who was the inspiration behind the act. Costa's heartfelt acceptance speech resonated deeply with attendees, shedding light on the shared emotional journeys of families coping with pediatric cancers.

Recognition of Congressman Don Bacon

Similarly, Congressman Bacon received recognition for his dedication to protecting living liver donors through the Living Donor Protection Act. This important legislation aims to prevent discrimination against living organ donors from insurance companies while ensuring they receive job-protected medical leave to recover from the donation process.

Bacon, who has been a staunch advocate for organ donations, shared his personal stories about how living donations can radically change lives for the better. His dedication to the cause was evident during his acceptance speech, further motivating supporters and attendees at the summit.

Honoring Community Advocates

The summit was not just about legislative recognition but also about honoring community advocates who tirelessly work to improve liver health awareness. Ruthanne Leishman was awarded the Transplant Innovator Award for her instrumental role in establishing ALF's Living Donor Network, which connects potential liver donors with transplant centers across the country.

The Liver Life Advocate Award was granted to Evelyn Rivera, who has demonstrated remarkable resilience as a liver cancer survivor and advocate, pushing for awareness and accessibility in New Mexico. Additionally, Manny Martinez received the Rising Advocate Award for his relentless engagement with the Hispanic community regarding liver diseases, underscoring the importance of outreach and education.

Calls to Action for Legislative Support

Throughout the summit, advocates met with their congressional representatives to discuss critical issues affecting liver health. Key priorities included:
  • - Advocating for living donors through the Living Donor Protection Act
  • - Ensuring patient access by urging Congress to support the Safe Step Act and Treat and Reduce Obesity Act
  • - Promoting awareness for pediatric liver cancer with Costa's bill to enhance early detection efforts
  • - Strengthening liver disease surveillance mechanisms

Stiehl passionately encouraged more individuals to engage in the advocacy process, asserting, "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ruthanne, Manny, and Evelyn for their incredible work on behalf of liver patients and their families." The summit demonstrated a strong coalition of advocates dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the realm of liver health.
