Michael Ploetz Takes the Helm at ELLMAN Estate Winery in Napa Valley

A New Chapter for ELLMAN Estate Winery

As ELLMAN Estate Winery marks its first anniversary of welcoming guests to its picturesque Napa Valley estate, it has made a significant leadership change by appointing Michael Ploetz as the new General Manager. This marks not just a transition, but a pivotal moment for the family-owned winery located on the iconic Silverado Trail. Their journey began with the vision of creating a lasting legacy in winemaking, and with Ploetz at the helm, they hope to continue this tradition of excellence.

Founded by vintners Lance and Neil Ellman, the winery draws inspiration from their South African roots, reflecting the essence of Napa Valley. The family's own experiences in the region highlight a deep connection with its unique landscape, reminiscent of their native Stellenbosch. Their 20-acre estate vineyard, nurtured in well-drained soils shaped by ancient riverbeds, was originally planted in 1999 with the Palmer clone of Cabernet Sauvignon. Fast forward to 2016, when the grapes from this vineyard contributed to the family's inaugural estate wine.

A key achievement over the past year has been the establishment of The Studio — a tasting space centrally located at the base of Soda Canyon, overlooking the vineyard that produces the wines. This space not only represents a return to winemaking on the estate, but also signifies their commitment to hospitality. According to Neil Ellman, the proprietor, “Our family came to Napa Valley to build something enduring, bringing personal expression to hospitality.” With Ploetz's leadership, the estate aims to cultivate relationships that elevate the guest experience, equally as important as the land itself.

Ploetz, who joined ELLMAN earlier this year as Estate and Sales Director, brings over two decades of luxury hospitality experience. He has held senior roles with prestigious names such as The Peninsula Hotels and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, as well as operational leadership within the José Andrés Group. His extensive background includes hands-on experience in direct-to-consumer hospitality programs at notable Napa Valley estates, partnering with acclaimed winemakers.

His appointment as General Manager comes with the responsibility of overseeing the estate’s hospitality and membership programs while guiding its growth. “A memorable place is more than just stunning; it should be warm, personal, and inviting. That’s the essence of The Studio,” Ploetz expressed. He envisions maintaining this special atmosphere as the winery expands, ensuring guests feel like they are part of the Ellman family from the moment they arrive.

On the production side, Ploetz steps into a wine program underpinned by estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, with the expertise of winemaker Andy Erickson, known for his work with prestigious Napa Valley names such as Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate. Together with associate winemaker Patrick Nyeholt and vineyard manager Domenick Bianco, the estate prides itself on producing a limited yet distinguished portfolio of wines, highlighted by the flagship Elaine Cabernet Sauvignon. This exclusive two-barrel release is dedicated to the family's matriarch and only made in select vintages.

Transitioning from the previous General Manager, Justin Vazquez, who has played a vital role in shaping the winery since its first vintage, reflects a well-planned succession aimed at strengthening the winery’s foundation. While Vazquez has started a new creative venture, he remains connected to the Ellman brand, hinting at a seamless transition in leadership.

As ELLMAN Estate Winery continues its journey with Ploetz leading the way, the focus remains on enriching guest experiences while honoring the family’s deep-rooted winemaking history. For those eager to discover the wines from this remarkable estate, details are available through their mailing list and allocation programs. This shift not only highlights the winery's dedication to quality but also its commitment to creating lasting memories for all visitors.
