Installation of the Wind Challenger on KUROTAKISAN MARU III
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), led by President Jotaro Tamura, in collaboration with J-Power, under the leadership of President Hideaki Kato, has recently completed a groundbreaking installation of the Wind Challenger, a hard-wing sail propulsion system, on their coal transport vessel, KUROTAKISAN MARU III. This installation marks a world-first for retrofitting an existing ship with wind propulsion technology, paving the way for a new chapter in eco-friendly maritime transport.
On April 13, 2026, this vessel made its first call at the Tachibana Bay Thermal Power Plant in Anan City, Tokushima Prefecture, followed by a visit to the Ishikawa Thermal Power Plant in Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture, on April 17. The adoption of wind propulsion aims to contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions in energy transport, addressing pressing environmental concerns.
Local stakeholders have warmly welcomed the ship's arrival, recognizing its role in supporting energy transport essential for community life while participating in the global transition toward sustainability. The KUROTAKISAN MARU III is set to operate long-term routes transporting coal for power generation across multiple regions. Its incorporation of the Wind Challenger technology is anticipated to enhance fuel efficiency significantly, aligning with MOL's commitment to environmental stewardship.
The Wind Challenger system, developed through collaboration between MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding, utilizes an innovative retractable sail to harness wind energy for propulsion. This cutting-edge technology represents one of the pivotal actions in MOL’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, encapsulated in their
