Discovering the Depths of Painting: A Group Exhibition at LURF GALLERY

Unveiling 'PAINTING': A Collective Exploration of Artistic Expression

From July 11 to August 16, 2026, LURF GALLERY's second floor will transform into a vibrant space celebrating the art of painting through a group exhibition titled 'PAINTING'. This event will showcase seven unique artists: Miki Ishiyama, Rio Uchino, Takuma Oue, Narumi Tsubakino, Fu Nagasawa, Kousuke Nishimura, and Eri Fukami. Each artist presents their individual interpretations and methods that challenge conventional notions of what painting can embody.

Painting, as defined by this exhibition, is not only the act of creating with brushstrokes but also an exploration of materials such as pigments, colors, and canvases—the very essence that composes an image. The artists participating in this exhibition delve into the nature of painting, questioning its boundaries and possibilities.

A New Perspective on Painting

The participating artists experiment with diverse approaches that interrogate senses, memories, and the complexity of emotions through their artworks. They emphasize the continual reshaping of everyday and societal imagery, alongside an inquiry into the structural components of painting itself—paints, canvases, and more. Their expressions serve to quietly expand the contours of what painting can represent today.

Through this exhibition, attendees are invited to explore the multifaceted existence of contemporary painting and appreciate the broader 'painting' horizon unveiled when these seven artists' practices come together in one space.

Featured Artists

Miki Ishiyama explores painting as a practice that connects to the long-standing human traditions of faith, ritual, and imagination, using everyday items like mops and cloths to interrogate the relationship between humans and the invisible world.

Rio Uchino considers the relationship between walls and paintings, weaving pigments into threads that challenge spatial norms, inviting shifting perceptions of art against natural elements.

Takuma Oue replaces personal tactile sensations with territorial concepts, reflecting on how individuals occupy and understand physical spaces through artistic expression.

Narumi Tsubakino grapples with capturing fleeting forms within painting, layering architectural fragments and human silhouettes to portray a state of flux and recognition.

Fu Nagasawa rethinks the representation of Eastern painting through everyday domestic art forms, investigating how personal interpretations emerge from tradition.

Kousuke Nishimura employs the technique of decalcomania, allowing the subconscious to shape his artworks, drawing from unintentional yet profound moments of creation.

Eri Fukami portrays humans not as fixed identities based on gender or race but as ever-evolving entities, intertwining identity with shared experiences across various lives.

This exhibition promises to be a captivating exploration of the evolving practice of painting in contemporary art, demonstrating how individualistic approaches can come together to create a rich tapestry of artistic dialogue.

As the show unfolds, attendees are encouraged to engage deeply with the artwork and interact with the artists, fostering a community dialogue around the themes presented in 'PAINTING'.
