Rediscover the Charm of Akihabara: AKIBA Subculture Summit 2025
From
August 1 to August 10, 2025, Akihabara will be hosting the
AKIBA Subculture Summit at Kanda Myojin, a vibrant event that highlights the unique culture, experiences, and commercial offerings of this iconic area. Organized by the
Akihabara Tourism Promotion Association (ATPA) under the leadership of President
Tomio Izumi, and supported by the
Chiyoda Ward, this summit aims to rejuvenate the community by showcasing Akihabara’s multifaceted charm to its local residents, visitors, and tourists alike.
Event Overview
Opening Ceremony
Join us for the opening ceremony on
August 1, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Kanda Myojin Cultural Exchange Center,
EDOCCO Studio. Admission is free, but it’s first-come, first-served for the first 120 attendees.
This opening will feature
special lectures from notable figures such as
Hiroshi Osaki, former chairman of Yoshimoto Kogyo, who will speak on “Entertainment from the Streets,” and
Katsu Uemoto, a professor at Digital Hollywood University, who will share insights on Akihabara’s transformation and enduring identity.
A
panel discussion titled “Akihabara DNA: Timeless Characteristics of Akihabara” will also take place, featuring voices from the vibrant Akihabara community including Tomio Izumi, Haruko Momoi, Nozomi Nagano, and Honi Niho, facilitated by Professor Katsu Uemoto.
Family Workshops
For families, we invite you to take part in a special workshop where participants can create their own
horse ear hair accessories and tails with guidance from instructor
kipi. The fee is
500 yen (cash on the day), and registration is limited to
40 groups of parents and children.
Akihabara Experience Tours (August 1 Only)
Two guided tours will be available on August 1:
1.
Cultural and Historical Tour (starting at 2:45 PM)
- A 60-minute journey through Akihabara's unique Otaku culture and historical hotspots, a must for any anime and gaming enthusiast.
2.
Photo Spot Tour for Workshop Participants (starting at 5:15 PM)
- Participants can wear their crafted accessories while exploring scenic photo spots around Akihabara.
Both tours start from Kanda Myojin and end at JR Akihabara Station.
Puzzle Quiz Rally (August 1-10)
From August 1 to August 10, a free
Puzzle Quiz Rally will be held across various commercial areas in Akihabara. Participants can tackle quizzes that will deepen their understanding of local history and culture. Correct answers could lead to coupons and other prizes!
