First Graduation Ceremony of Kids Architecture School Marks a New Era in Architectural Education

Celebrating the First Graduating Class of Kids Architecture School

After three years since its inception, the Kids Architecture School, operated by Rui Sekkeishi, recently held its first graduation ceremony on March 20, 2026. Thirteen students, part of the first cohort, were awarded the unique certification of "Kids Architect"—an accolade given to those who have successfully completed the school's curriculum. The event was an emotional occasion where students shared poignant stories about their transformative experiences, reflected on their growth, and expressed gratitude to their parents and instructors.

Student Testimonials: Reflecting on Growth

During their time at the Kids Architecture School, students experienced significant personal and intellectual development. One student revealed, "Initially, I was only interested in design, having no real passion for architecture. However, as I collaborated with classmates to create structures, I discovered the joy of design and developed the skill to understand the needs of clients and translate those into architectural concepts."

Another student noted, "While I lacked prior knowledge of architecture, I found myself able to draft perspectives and blueprints, significantly enhancing my technical skills and realizing my own potential."

A third student highlighted their capacity to synthesize diverse ideas: "I learned to express my opinions confidently while also incorporating different viewpoints from my peers, fostering collaborative synergy."

Changing Perspectives on Architecture

In terms of shifts in perception about the field of architecture, students shared insights: "Previously, I thought architecture was a solitary endeavor, but through collaborative efforts for our final presentations, I realized the immense reward and fulfillment found in this profession."

Another remarked, "My future career aspirations have transformed through this experience, and I am eager to study further in this direction next year."

Graduation Ceremony Highlights

The graduation ceremony featured presentations where students discussed their portfolios, showcasing their projects and sharing significant moments and lessons learned over the past three years.

The awarding of the "Kids Architect" certifications was a proud moment, with the attendees celebrating the achievements of the young architects.

佐藤賢志, an early instructor of the Kids Architecture School, imparted an empowering message: “Not everything will work out perfectly, but a strong desire to challenge oneself and to meet the expectations of those around you can lead to remarkable achievements. Whether you pursue architecture or other paths, I encourage you to retain this spirit as you move forward.”

The Journey of Kids Architecture School

Since its establishment, the Kids Architecture School has seen participation from approximately 3,700 students in Osaka, maintaining an impressive satisfaction rate exceeding 90%. Over the past three years, the program has expanded its curriculum, offering diverse activities ranging from model-making to property tours and sketching classes.

In Tokyo, the initiative gained traction as well, with more than 300 participants experiencing a 97% satisfaction rate. Experts led workshops on sketching, including renowned architect Yoshikata Sato, who designed the Nagano Olympic Stadium.

The Reasons for Establishing the Kids Architecture School

Three critical factors motivated the setting up of the Kids Architecture School:
1. Shortage of Young Engineers: With approximately 70% of top architects being over the age of 50 and a declining youth demographic, there is an urgent need to nurture future architects. The demographic data indicates the pressing challenges facing the architectural profession in Japan.

2. Developing Scientific Talent: There is an impending shortage of IT personnel, projected to reach 790,000 by 2030. With a push from the government for increased focus on STEM education, the importance of hands-on experiences in architecture is highlighted. Thus, the curriculum emphasizes tangible experiences like creating models and designing treehouses, intertwining both digital and physical learning.

3. Innovative Learning Approaches: After 50 years in the education sector, Rui Sekkeishi sought to transition from traditional rote learning to experiential education. Leveraging its resources, the organization introduced the Kids Architecture School, creating a unique learning environment where students can gain practical insights into the architectural profession.
