Carolina Panthers and Bank of America Unveil Innovative 3rd & Goal Initiative for Youth Development

Carolina Panthers and Bank of America Launch 3rd & Goal Initiative

In a transformative collaboration, the Carolina Panthers introduced their flagship platform, 3rd & Goal, on September 15, 2026. This innovative initiative, developed in partnership with Bank of America, targets the essential developmental years of children in the Carolinas, focusing primarily on enhancing literacy, promoting physical wellness, and supporting personal well-being.

Goals of the Initiative

The 3rd & Goal platform is designed to reach 10,000 students across North and South Carolina within its first year. The program comprises three main pillars that aim to foster holistic development for children:

1. Read 20: A reading initiative to inspire children to read proficiently by the end of third grade. This area focuses on the critical importance of early literacy, as research indicates that children not achieving reading proficiency by this stage face increased risks of dropping out of high school. The goal is to motivate students to engage in reading activities for at least twenty minutes each day by integrating Panthers-themed events and incentives.

2. Play 60: Building on a broader NFL initiative, this aspect encourages children to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Given the lower activity levels noted among youth in the Carolinas, this effort focuses on school-based programs that promote flag football and other physical education resources, instilling healthy habits while enhancing student engagement.

3. Feel 100: Recognizing the growing need for mental health support, this initiative works to improve personal well-being among students. Through discussions, experiential learning, and classroom activities, students will learn to understand their emotions, practice self-regulation, and develop healthy social connections.

Launch Event Highlights

The 3rd & Goal initiative was officially revealed at a vibrant field day held at Bank of America Stadium, where over 400 third-grade students from Title I schools across the Carolinas joined Panthers players, staff, and Bank of America executives in celebratory activities. This event exemplified a unified effort to enhance community impact and underscore the importance of collaboration in youth development.

Kristi Coleman, CEO of Tepper Sports Entertainment and President of the Carolina Panthers, expressed the intent behind the initiative, stating that "3rd & Goal gives us an opportunity to bring that work together under a single, unified platform. Our vision is for 3rd & Goal to become the signature community initiative for our organization."

Keith Cockrell, President of Bank of America Charlotte, further emphasized the shared belief that investing in young people fortifies community strength. The goal is to help children across the Carolinas establish a strong foundation for lifelong success through the integrated approach of literacy, physical activity, and mental well-being.

Measurable Impact

The initiative will utilize research-driven benchmarks to assess its effectiveness over the following three years. The collaboration with the UNC Charlotte Center for Educational Measurement and Evaluation (CEME) will ensure rigorous evaluation through ongoing tracking of program implementation and student engagement metrics.

Conclusion

The 3rd & Goal initiative, with its robust focus on youth literacy, physical wellness, and mental health, represents a significant leap forward in community engagement and youth support. By merging sports and education, the Carolina Panthers and Bank of America aim to create a sustainable impact on the lives of young people in the Carolinas, paving the way for a brighter future.

With the dedication from both the Panthers and Bank of America, the expectations set for the 3rd & Goal initiative are high, promising to foster significant change for thousands of children each year, making it a seminal model for future community partnerships nationwide.
