New Leadership for the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine

The Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (ADLM), previously known as AACC, is gearing up for a transformation in its leadership, which will officially begin in August 2025. Renowned clinical pathologist Stanley F. Lo, PhD, DABCC, FADLM, has been voted as the president-elect and will assume the presidency in August 2026. This election brings a wave of excitement, innovation, and expertise to the organization as it seeks to elevate laboratory medicine’s role in healthcare.

Dr. Lo, a well-respected figure in the field, is currently a professor of pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and serves as the associate director of the clinical laboratories at Children’s Wisconsin. An ADLM member since 1994, his extensive involvement in various capacities within the organization includes serving as chair of both the ADLM Pediatric Maternal-Fetal Division and the Academy of Diagnostics. With his rich history and deep commitment to laboratory medicine, Dr. Lo expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, noting, "I am honored that ADLM's membership has chosen me to serve as president-elect of the association. This is an exciting time for the organization and for the field."

Alongside Dr. Lo, the elections also introduced other significant changes to the leadership team. Frederick Strathmann, MS, MBA, PhD, DABCC, has been appointed as the treasurer, bringing his experience as senior vice president of global business at MOBILion Systems. His role will span from August 2025 to July 2028, as he replaces outgoing treasurer.

The ADLM board will also welcome new directors, including Nam Tran, PhD, and Melanie Yarbrough, PhD, who will lend their expertise as board members for the upcoming terms. Dr. Tran is known for his pivotal work in clinical pathology and as the director of the UC Davis biorepository, while Dr. Yarbrough’s role as an associate professor at Washington University in St. Louis adds further depth to the board. Both leaders bring with them a wealth of experience and insights into the fields of diagnostics and laboratory medicine.

Moreover, Zhen Zhao, PhD, DABCC, FADLM, will act as the president of the Academy of Diagnostics and join the board, contributing to the leadership's vision for academic excellence and innovation within the association. Michelle Steiner, MS, MLS (ASCP)CM, CHT (ACHI) is also set to work closely with the board as chair of the Clinical Laboratory Scientists Council starting August 2025.

The newly elected Nominating Committee members, including Steven Cotten, PhD, DABCC; Mark Marzinke, PhD, DABCC, FADLM; and Maria Willrich, PhD, are also notable additions. They play a vital role in ensuring diverse and talented representation within the association, thus safeguarding ADLM’s commitment to fostering leadership and advancing the fields of laboratory medicine and clinical pathology.

Over the years, ADLM has established itself as a groundbreaking organization dedicated to enhancing healthcare through laboratory medicine. With more than 70,000 members across 110 countries, ADLM represents a diverse community that includes clinical laboratory professionals, physicians, and research scientists. Founded in 1948, the association has fostered innovation and collaboration to help professionals adapt to new challenges and advancements in laboratory practices.

The incoming leadership team emphasizes the importance of staying abreast of innovations, particularly in the realms of data science and technology, which continue to reshape laboratory medicine significantly. Dr. Lo points out that it is essential for laboratory professionals to have access to the latest research and best practices in a fast-evolving landscape. He anticipates working alongside the board, staff, and members to provide resources and opportunities for collaboration that will empower clinicians to provide critical insights for patient care.

With the new leadership set to begin their terms, the ADLM community can look forward to the promising developments that lie ahead. Together, they are poised to tackle the challenges of tomorrow, ensuring laboratory professionals continue to enhance the quality of care that patients receive globally.
