MOL Ferry and Kanematsu Petro Conduct Mixed Fuel Trial to Promote Decarbonization

MOL Ferry and Kanematsu Petro's Mixed Fuel Trial

In an effort to reduce emissions in the maritime sector, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) subsidiary Sunflower Ferries and Kanematsu Petro conducted a trial using a blend of bio-diesel fuel mixed with heavy oil on the long-distance ferry "Sunflower Kirishima." The trial was held prior to the ferry's scheduled service route between Osaka and Shibushi in Kagoshima, set to launch in July 2026.

During the trial, a blend of 5% biodiesel (known as FAME - Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) was used with A-grade heavy oil, referred to as B5A heavy oil. This innovative fuel is derived from recycled cooking oil provided by Sanwa Energy Co., and it meets the high-purity bio-diesel fuel standards set by the Japan Diesel Association. Moreover, it is registered with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism under the New Technology Information System (NETIS).

The trial aimed to assess the applicability of FAME mixed fuel on the ferry's main engine, generators, and boilers. The testing took place in various stages, from moored operations to maritime navigation, while monitoring the operational conditions closely. Impressively, the results indicated stable operational performance across all tested components, with no significant malfunctions or adverse effects attributed to the use of the FAME mixed fuel.

This successful trial not only highlights the feasibility of using FAME mixed fuel in real-world maritime operations but also contributes valuable knowledge that could assist in expanding the use of low-carbon fuels and promoting decarbonization in the shipping industry.

As the maritime sector accelerates its efforts to cut carbon emissions, MOL and Kanematsu Petro are committed to implementing low-carbon fuel solutions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from existing vessels. This trial represents a crucial step toward the practical application of sustainable fuels in maritime transport.

Furthermore, Kanematsu Petro has obtained the sustainability certification "ISCC EU certification," which complies with the revised EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). This positions them to continue sourcing and supplying a diverse range of low-carbon fuels both domestically and internationally to support decarbonization in the maritime sector.

Moving forward, MOL Ferries and Kanematsu Petro plan to capitalize on the insights gained from this trial to expand the application of low-carbon fuels in the shipping industry. Through collaboration with relevant stakeholders, they aim to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of maritime operations and the realization of a sustainable society.
