This initiative comes in response to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) announcement calling for proposals due by June 12, 2026. The company, recognized for its focus on addressing rare diseases with significant unmet medical needs, emphasizes the importance of rapid vaccine development, particularly against threats like the Bundibugyo virus, which has been linked to recent outbreaks in regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

In collaboration with Dr. Axel Lehrer, a noted professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Hawaii, Soligenix has previously developed thermostable bivalent and trivalent vaccines that utilize antigens from various Ebola-related viruses. These vaccines have shown promising results in terms of stability, immunogenicity, and efficacy in animal models. Dr. Lehrer's laboratory work has reinforced the platform's adaptability with the key Bundibugyo virus antigens, making the application to CEPI a real possibility for swift advancement in vaccine technology.

Dr. Lehrer highlighted the success of their filovirus vaccines, boasting robust immune responses in animal studies and emphasizing that 100% protection was achieved in non-human primates. He elaborated on the development of vaccines with extended stability, crucial for effective deployment in virus-endemic countries in Africa. The prospect of a single-vial subunit vaccine, which can be stored at ambient temperature, presents a breakthrough for simplifying both storage and distribution—crucial factors in areas where healthcare systems may be under-resourced.

"The development of this thermostable vaccine is particularly relevant for regions where the Bundibugyo virus is endemic and during strategic planning for potential pandemic situations," Dr. Lehrer stated. Moreover, he believes that such a vaccine could act not only as a standalone solution but also as a beneficial booster for individuals who may have received other vaccinations.

Schaber, the President and CEO of Soligenix, explained that their proprietary ThermoVax® platform has demonstrated success in stabilizing vaccines for various viruses, including Ebola, Sudan, and Marburg, as well as COVID-19. He emphasized that these advancements enhance the traditional protein subunit vaccination technology, allowing it to remain competitive against vaccines requiring stricter cold-storage solutions. The potential speed at which these vaccines can elicit broad immune responses effectively positions them as a preferred option in the fight against deadly viruses.

Historically, Ebola outbreaks, including the recent surge in Bundibugyo virus cases, emphasize the urgency of developing effective vaccines. The current crisis has seen 397 confirmed cases and 65 deaths due to the Bundibugyo virus as of June 4, 2026. The World Health Organization declared this outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, accentuating the need for effective therapeutics and vaccines for filovirus infections, which have notoriously high mortality rates.
