Halifax Humane Society and Petco Love Unite to Utilize AI for Lost Pets

Halifax Humane Society and Petco Love: A New Era for Lost Pets

As hurricane season approaches, the Halifax Humane Society is taking a significant step forward in helping lost pets find their way home. In partnership with Petco Love, the organization has activated a revolutionary tool known as Petco Love Lost, a free, AI-powered pet reunification database designed to ensure pets can quickly return to their families, especially during times of crisis when they may become lost. This innovative initiative will be available throughout Volusia County, including cities like Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, and Deltona.

A Partnership for Pet Safety

Sean Hawkins, the CEO of Halifax Humane Society, has emphasized the urgency and necessity of this initiative. "Every pet in Volusia County should be registered in this free system before a storm hits," he stated. The platform allows pet parents to register their pets using just one photo. In case a pet goes missing, anyone who finds the pet can instantly upload a photo, which the national database will use to match it with the registered pet owner's information. This speedy process can help reunite lost pets within minutes without them ever needing to step into a shelter.

Petco Love Lost is not a standalone effort; it has already partnered with over 3,000 shelters and rescues across the United States. By integrating this technology into their operations, Halifax Humane Society aims to facilitate faster reunifications. The organization uploads every pet that comes into their shelter onto the Petco Love Lost platform, providing a broader net for missing pets and their families.

Community-Wide Involvement

The key to maximizing the impact of this initiative lies in community participation. Hawkins and his team are reaching out to local officials, veterinary clinics, and rescue groups, encouraging them to incorporate Petco Love Lost into their standard practices. This county-wide coordinated deployment effort is a first of its kind, marking Volusia County as a standout example of how civil commitments can foster compassion in the community.

Gina Knepp, National Program Manager for Petco Love Lost, elaborated on the program's potential, highlighting its success in various regions across the country and pointing out the unique opportunity for Volusia County. "When an entire region collaborates to reunite pets with their families via a single platform, it not only saves lives but also fosters a deeper sense of compassion within our communities."

To facilitate this community-wide effort, the Halifax Humane Society is hosting two free workshops in partnership with Petco Love aimed at educating shelters, rescue organizations, and veterinarians about the platform's capabilities:

Hawkins insists that the initiative's success hinges on active participation. He urges pet parents across Volusia County to register their pets on the Petco Love Lost website immediately. This simple action could significantly alter the outcome for lost pets and expedite their safe return home. "Uploading a picture of your pet only takes three minutes and could literally save your pet's life!" he adds.
