Unique Tote Bag Initiative
On September 23, a new tote bag will be launched, featuring the collaborative efforts of juveniles from Tamah Juvenile Institution and FC Tokyo. This initiative, spearheaded by ICHI INC., aims to tackle the issue of juvenile crime in Japan, which has given rise to a pressing need for social reform. The mission to "reduce teenage crime" has become a guiding principle for both the company and the participating youths, underlining the importance of rehabilitation and social acceptance.
Collaborative Design Process
The philosophical foundations of the tote bag stem from an intensive program called the "HIGH HOPE Program Product Planning," which commenced in March 2025. Over five sessions, nine juvenile participants engaged in brainstorming and discussions to develop the concepts and designs reflected in the final product. Graphic designer Masato Suzuki from the company ennn played a crucial role in transforming these ideas into a tangible design, with manufacturing support from the Fuchu Prison, facilitated by the select shop SHIPS.
The youths pondered deep questions throughout the creation process, such as, "Who do you want this bag to reach?" and "What feelings do you hope to evoke?" Their collective efforts resulted in a tote bag that not only carries physical items but also embodies their messages of hope, healing, and social responsibility.
Design Insights
The idea behind the tote bag is encapsulated in two primary concepts: "A bag that warms the hearts of both the buyer and the children who will use it" and a design that reminds us of our shared humanity. The profuse expression of childhood vulnerabilities within the graphics showcases the creativity of the young designers who are eager to make a positive impact. One poignant line in their design reads:
"They didn’t look alike. They didn't grow up the same. But somehow, they understood each other. And that was enough."
This stripped-down expression of shared feelings and experiences resonated deeply, signifying the bond among individuals, regardless of their backgrounds.
Feedback from Participants
The reflections shared by the juveniles highlight significant personal insights gained through this program. Many articulated the realization that despite their troubled pasts, they have the potential to help and support others. One participant expressed a profound understanding:
"I realized that even someone like me, who has caused trouble for others, can still help and support someone. I feel so happy knowing I can be part of the community that helps each other."
Similarly, another participant wished to positively influence society, especially for children in orphanages, ensuring they do not follow the same path they did. This desire for social contributions and to change the future for vulnerable children is a driving force behind the program and the designs.

Looking Ahead
The HIGH HOPE initiative aims for future growth through ongoing engagement with juvenile participants, using their creativity as a means of personal development and social impact.
ICHI INC. seeks to shift the societal narrative on juvenile delinquency while fostering a supportive environment for youths looking to rebuild their lives. With increasing cooperation from local businesses, community organizations, and social services, there lies a pathway for rehabilitation and empowerment of these young individuals.
Through this program, we hope to inspire change and create a society rich in compassion and understanding, driven by the very youths it seeks to uplift.
