New Research from EMA on Designing and Managing Hybrid Multi-Cloud Networks

Insights into Hybrid Multi-Cloud Networks

Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), a prominent IT research and consulting organization, has released its latest report titled "Enterprise Strategies for Hybrid, Multi-Cloud Networks". Authored by Shamus McGillicuddy, the vice president of research at EMA for network infrastructure and operations, this document offers critical insights into how enterprises can effectively design, build, and operate their hybrid and multi-cloud networks.

With increasing adoption of hybrid cloud strategies that blend on-premises data centers with colocation facilities and public cloud services, the pressure is on. Currently, 56% of enterprises have adopted multi-cloud solutions, utilizing two or more public cloud providers for their infrastructure as a service (IaaS) or platform as a service (PaaS) offerings. EMA's research indicates that, while organizations continue to move digital services to public cloud, many enterprises will likely maintain hybrid environments. This balance of traditional infrastructure combined with various cloud platforms supports the need for performance, compliance, and operational efficiency.

The research is based on feedback from 354 IT professionals working within hybrid or multi-cloud ecosystems. This study elucidates how these entities are navigating the complexities associated with their network architectures. Importantly, EMA’s findings act as an informative roadmap for organizations that haven't yet commenced their own hybrid or multi-cloud transition. The report investigates what approaches were effective and highlights challenges encountered during the development of the necessary networks.

Shamus McGillicuddy states, "Complexity is the current standard for hybrid, multi-cloud networks. A significant number of enterprises struggle with consistently managing network infrastructures and services across these varied environments. IT stakeholders have expressed that consolidating the management of key elements such as routing, security, IP address allocation, and DNS systems across their networks is a priority. This presents a critical challenge as companies further diversify their cloud strategies."

Some significant takeaways from the report include the following points:

  • - Only 25% of participants feel their organizations have successfully developed and maintained hybrid multi-cloud networks.
  • - A mere 37% believe that their network and cloud teams work together effectively.
  • - Cloud service providers are identified as the preferred source of networking solutions within hybrid multi-cloud environments.
  • - Just 29% of respondents are fully satisfied with their observability capabilities concerning cloud networks, often relying on tools from their cloud providers and traditional network monitoring solutions.

This meaningful independent research has been sponsored by major organizations including BlueCat, EfficientIP, IBM, Infoblox, and NETSCOUT. The complete analysis of these findings is available in the comprehensive report entitled "Enterprise Strategies for Hybrid, Multi-Cloud Networks".

To share insights from this report, Shamus McGillicuddy will present a webinar on April 23, providing an accessible platform for industry professionals to learn more about managing hybrid multi-cloud infrastructures.
