Emergency Relief Efforts in Nepal

In response to the severe floods and landslides that hit Nepal, Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), a non-profit organization based in Hiroshima, has launched urgent relief activities for affected communities. This initiative is made possible through collaboration with Fast Retailing, the parent company of Uniqlo, aiming to restore safe living conditions and rebuild community infrastructure in the disaster-stricken areas.

The catastrophic floods, which occurred on August 26, 2026, primarily affected regions around the Bote Kosi River in central Nepal. Massive volumes of water, mud, and rocks poured down from mountainous areas near the border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, wreaking havoc in communities throughout the Ruswa district and downstream in Nuwakot. This disaster severely damaged homes, roads, bridges, and hydroelectric facilities, leaving many residents in dire need of assistance.

As the affected population struggles to restore their homes, they are currently engaged in the difficult task of manually clearing mud and debris that has invaded their living spaces. However, this process poses significant risks as the debris often contains sharp objects, contaminated mud, and even deceased animals, raising concerns over injuries and hygiene conditions. In areas where individuals remain missing, a cautious approach is crucial for debris removal.

Compounding the tragedy, vital documents needed for rebuilding lives, such as identification papers, land ownership records, and cherished family mementos, may be trapped within the collapsed structures or debris. Many people store important documents on paper, making the meticulous recovery of these items critical for the victims' lives. PWJ aims to search for these documents with care and return them to their rightful owners, providing essential support for their recovery and rehabilitation.

Working collaboratively with local governments, communities, and non-governmental organizations, PWJ is committed to advancing safe debris removal and infrastructure recovery while taking into account the specific needs and wishes of the affected individuals. The organization emphasizes that ongoing support, from immediate relief to long-term recovery, is vital to ensure that survivors can sustainably regain their lives within their familiar environments.

Since its establishment in February 1996 by Kenji Ohnishi, Peace Winds Japan has been dedicated to addressing humanitarian crises caused by natural disasters, conflicts, and poverty, both domestically and internationally. Operating across 41 countries and regions, the organization also runs various initiatives such as the “Flying Medical Search Team” for disaster response, and “Peace Wanko Japan,” committed to promoting zero euthanasia for dogs.
