Sanyo Shokai Attains Leadership Level A- Score in CDP Climate Change Survey
Overview of Sanyo Shokai's Achievement
Sanyo Shokai, a comprehensive apparel manufacturer based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has been awarded an A- score in the
CDP Climate Change Questionnaire for the fiscal year 2025. This recognition highlights Sanyo Shokai’s commitment to climate change mitigation and transparency in environmental reporting. The
CDP, an international non-profit organization focused on environmental issues, evaluates the initiatives and disclosures of companies and municipalities regarding their environmental impacts. Its rating system categorizes companies on an eight-level scale (A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, D, D-), and Sanyo Shokai's A- rating signifies a notable improvement from its previous year’s score of B, achieving a position within the top two levels of assessment.
Details of the CDP Assessment Process
The
CDP actively surveys global enterprises and organizations about their environmental practices, openly publishing the findings. Its rigorous environmental information disclosure system is recognized as a global standard among businesses. Sanyo Shokai began submitting responses to the CDP questionnaire in the fiscal year 2022, and its most recent assessment confirms that its efforts in climate change management and information disclosure are among the best in the sector.
Sanyo Shokai's Climate Change Initiatives
Starting in 2023, Sanyo Shokai has identified “contribution to a sustainable global environment” as one of its key material issues. The company aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with its business activities. The Sustainability Committee, established in 2021, leads the charge on setting and managing targets for GHG emission reductions. Specifically, Sanyo Shokai aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 52% from the 2019 levels by the year 2030, and reduce Scope 3 emissions from categories 1, 3, 4, and 12 by 30%. By 2050, the company strives for net-zero GHG emissions for Scope 1 and 2.
Implementing Change: Key Strategies and Goals
To achieve these ambitious targets, Sanyo Shokai is implementing various initiatives. For Scope 1 and 2, the company is enhancing energy efficiency by introducing LED lighting across stores and offices. Additionally, it has transitioned its headquarters in Tokyo to 100% renewable energy as of December 2024, aligning with its goal to reach CO2 emission-free power by 2030.
In terms of Scope 3, Sanyo Shokai is focusing on optimizing its procurement processes, improving consumption rates, and using environmentally friendly materials in product development. The company is also working on modeling its factories and enhancing collaboration with key suppliers to further reduce emissions throughout the supply chain.
By March 2025, Sanyo Shokai plans to acquire SBT (Science Based Targets) validation from the international initiative SBTi concerning its GHG emission reduction goals for 2030. In May, it will also obtain third-party verification reports to improve the reliability of its emissions data for Scope 1, 2, and 3.
Additionally, the company is committed to waste reduction via inventory management, minimizing plastic use and recycling in retail and logistics, and engaging in garment collection activities. The initiative
RE: SANYO, which focuses on the sale of certified reusable items, also underscores Sanyo Shokai's dedication to sustainability.
Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability
Sanyo Shokai is dedicated to fostering a sustainable society through these various actions and initiatives targeting climate change. The company remains steadfast in its objective to contribute to creating a sustainable world by ensuring that every department is involved in the sustainability efforts moving forward.
