In a significant milestone for the field of quantum imaging technology, Diffraqtion, a promising start-up derived from prestigious MIT and the University of Maryland, has successfully raised a total of $10 million in funding. This pivotal investment was made by Lockheed Martin Ventures and Presidio Ventures, which is the venture arm of the Sumitomo Corporation. This influx of capital is set to propel the company as it continues to develop quantum camera platforms targeted at enhancing defense and space-based sensing capabilities.
The announcement of this funding comes as Diffraqtion rounds off its pre-seed funding phase after experiencing a notable surge in investor interest. The initial close of this round commenced in January 2026, led by Ground State Ventures, and it has since attracted a consortium of investors, including SBI US Gateway Fund in collaboration with Plug and Play, Collaborative Fund, and TekVentures. Follow-on participation from existing investors such as Aether VC and milemark•capital has further solidified the financial backing essential for Diffraqtion’s future growth.
Since the first close, Diffraqtion has demonstrated rapid advancements, notably completing successful on-sky demonstrations at a partner observatory. These tests effectively distinguish closely spaced objects, a critical capability in both defense and space observational operations. The company’s commitment to innovation also extends to their ongoing work with DARPA, where their Direct-to-Phase-II Small Business Innovation Research program has progressed into its second option period. Additionally, NASA has selected Diffraqtion for an SBIR Phase I contract focusing on orbital debris tracking, showcasing the practical applications of their technology.
Diffraqtion’s proprietary quantum cameras possess the unique capability to resolve details that fall below the diffraction limit—a conventional optical barrier. This is achieved by analyzing incoming light based on shape rather than brightness, which allows the cameras to capture nuances often discarded by traditional imaging systems. The result is a significant reduction in the aperture size and computational resources usually required to classify distant objects. According to internal simulations, the technology enables the resolution of features up to 20 times smaller than those detectable by standard cameras, while also speeding up the classification processes significantly compared to existing methods.
The latest funding round will be instrumental in bringing Diffraqtion’s technology into operational settings, with the company now beginning work on its first fielded camera. This initial phase will involve flight testing through a hosted payload on a partner spacecraft, marking a crucial step toward real-world application of their innovations. To spearhead this development, Peter Kazlas has been appointed as Head of Engineering, bringing with him an impressive 25 years of experience in scaling novel optics from laboratory prototypes to mass production—expertise essential for Diffraqtion’s ambitious vision.
Johannes Galatsanos, CEO and Co-Founder of Diffraqtion, emphasized the transformative nature of their technology, stating, "For as long as cameras have existed, seeing farther has meant building bigger optics. Our cameras break that paradigm, delivering better mission capability at a fraction of the aperture, size, and cost. Now we're building our first fielded camera and preparing for operational engagements in space domain awareness and reconnaissance."
