Parked Innovations Unveils National Initiative for Safe Parking Solutions with Dwell Behind the Shield
Parked Innovations Launches Dwell Behind the Shield
In a significant move to support individuals facing vehicular homelessness, Parked Innovations LLC, an automotive accessory company based in Los Angeles, has launched a national initiative titled Dwell Behind the Shield. This program focuses on providing sponsor-funded Vehicle Dash Privacy Shields (VDPS) to participants enrolled in qualifying Safe Parking programs across the country. The initiative stems from the personal experiences of the company’s president, Ricardo Kennedy, who faced his own challenges with housing loss during the 2023 Hollywood writers' and actors' strikes.
Ricardo Kennedy, an IATSE Local 80 grip with various production credits, initiated this program after realizing the importance of privacy for individuals who have to live in their vehicles. "When your vehicle becomes the place where you sleep, change clothes, eat, and spend your private time, privacy becomes invaluable,” Kennedy explained. His groundbreaking concept, the VDPS, is designed exclusively for parked vehicles. By creating a barrier across the windshield while allowing outward visibility through integrated privacy mesh, this shield addresses the safety and comfort concerns of those living in their cars.
Recent statistics highlight the growing issue of vehicular homelessness, particularly in cities like Los Angeles. According to the RAND Corporation's LA LEADS survey, approximately 11% of those who are unsheltered in areas like Hollywood and Skid Row reported living in their vehicle. This alarming statistic brings to light the necessity for practical solutions that not only provide shelter but also enhance the quality of life for individuals facing these hardships. Privacy is one of the key factors influencing how unhoused individuals assess their shelter and housing options.
Parked Innovations is reaching out to over 26 Safe Parking organizations nationwide to partake in this initiative. Notably, potential participants are not required to partner formally with the company; rather, anyone who is registered with a qualifying Safe Parking program can apply directly for a sponsor-funded VDPS through VehicleDashPrivacyShield.com. The application process includes eligibility verification and product availability checks, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to those in need.
When discussing the launch, Kennedy expressed empathy for those in similar situations he once experienced. "I know what it feels like when your car stops being transportation and becomes home," he said.
