Explore the Artistic Wonders of Nerima
Nerima Art Museum, located in the heart of Tokyo's Nerima district, is set to inspire both residents and visitors alike with its upcoming series of art workshops titled "Nerima's Natural History: Fragments of Beauty." Scheduled from May to October 2026, these workshops are designed to deepen participants' appreciation for local aesthetics while offering hands-on artistic experiences.
The initiative is spearheaded by the talented artist and independent educator,
Toshiki Enomoto. Renowned for his dedication in promoting art education, Enomoto's impressive credentials include past roles as an educator at Meguro Museum of Art and as head of the educational division at Oita Prefectural Art Museum. His workshops are tailored to engage a diverse audience, from children to adults, making art accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Workshop Overview
The workshops are centered around the theme of reflecting on the everyday and surroundings, allowing participants to choose from four engaging courses:
- - Course A: "Seeing and Drawing Botanical Treasures" (May 17)
In this session, participants will explore medicinal plants, including familiar herbs such as dokudami (Houttuynia cordata) and yomogi (mugwort). Participants will observe and draw using various materials and techniques. This workshop invites students from the 4th grade and older.
- - Course B: "Painting from Memory: Melodic Landscapes of Nerima" (June 14)
Focused on nostalgia, this course encourages participants to depict memorable places from their childhood within Nerima. It is open to those from 5th grade and older, allowing individuals to reconnect with their past.
- - Course C: "New Discoveries: Slide Collage" (August 9)
Participants will experiment with light and shadow using everyday paper and other materials to create collages. Split into two sessions, one for elementary students and the other for middle school students and adults, this course promises creativity and innovation.
- - Course D: "Nerima's Universe Encapsulated" (October 4)
This unique workshop invites participants to encase personal treasures, such as stones or plants collected from parks, in bottling specimens. Intended for participants from the 4th grade and up, it aims to highlight beauty in personal belongings.
Participation Details
Each workshop requires prior registration, with a limited capacity of 20 participants per session. The participation fee is set at 500 yen, payable in cash only. Interested individuals can register through the Nerima Art Museum website or via postal application until specified deadlines for each course.
Outreach through Schools
In addition to public workshops, the museum also runs educational school programs, bringing art to local students. This outreach initiative encourages young learners to use their imagination in creating fantasy flora and fauna inspired by their environment.
Exhibition of Creations
Concluding these workshop series, a special exhibition will be held to showcase the artwork created by all participants. This exhibition, taking place from January 28 to February 14, 2027, at the museum, will feature an array of artworks, including plants from Nerima, imaginary creatures, and slide collages.
