A Decade of Innovation in St. Petersburg
As the St. Petersburg Innovation District celebrates its tenth anniversary, it highlights its profound impact on economic growth and groundbreaking research. Over the past decade, this collaborative hub has generated over $3 billion in economic activity while supporting more than 10,000 jobs, primarily driven by sectors such as marine science and life sciences.
Economic Contributions
The district has experienced significant growth, particularly in marine science, which has added a staggering $700 million to the local economy – an incredible 274% increase since 2018. This sector has also contributed to creating over 2,000 jobs, with 1,300 new positions added in the past few years alone. Simultaneously, the life sciences sector has seen a 112% growth, contributing about $1.7 billion and providing nearly 6,700 jobs, including over 2,000 new roles in the same period.
Academic Excellence
Supporting this economic surge is a robust educational landscape. Institutions surrounding the district have been crucial in developing a skilled workforce, exhibiting a 27.5% increase in diploma attainment since 2016, far surpassing the national figure of 10%. The growth in STEAM fields, crucial for innovation, is even more remarkable, boasting a 46.9% increase locally, compared to a national rise of just 11.7%.
Infrastructure Developments
The district's physical transformation has been equally impressive, with major investments such as the Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Education and Research Building and the Maritime and Defense Technology Hub. Other pivotal projects include Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital's Institute Square and the innovative spARK Labs by ARK Invest, alongside research vessels from the Florida Institute of Oceanography.
Looking Ahead
Leaders within the Innovation District are determined to continue this momentum into the next decade. Alison Barlow, CEO of the St. Petersburg Innovation District, notes, "This is a defining moment for the Innovation District. We've created a powerful ecosystem where collaboration, research, and talent converge to drive real economic impact — and we're just getting started."
Anniversary Celebration
A special anniversary event is scheduled for April 10, 2026, at 4:30 PM to commemorate this milestone and engage the community, partners, and investors in shaping the district's future. Those interested in participating can visit the
