Harajuku's Refreshing Initiative Against Summer Heat
As the temperature rises, so does the need for creative solutions to beat the summer heat. This year, the beloved Harajuku district is taking a significant leap forward with the
'Harajuku -3°C Project', a collaborative effort led by
Tokyu Plaza Harajuku's Harakado. From
July 17 to August 3, 2025, Harajuku aims to provide visitors with a refreshing escape from the sweltering summer climate.
Background of the Project
Given the escalating impact of climate change, the expected heat of the summer is worrying. Studies have revealed that the average temperature in Harajuku has climbed nearly
3°C over the last decade. With this new project, businesses and community organizations are coming together, determined to offer a cool haven for everyone visiting the area.
This collaborative effort includes major players like
Kao Corporation,
Tokyu Real Estate,
Tokyu Bus, and local associations, uniting to create a unique experience themed around coolness, or "涼" (ryou) in Japanese.
Creative Offerings
Harakado will act as the central hub for various refreshing activities. One standout feature will be the
'Hiyakadoterrace', a rooftop area where visitors can enjoy specially created -3°C shaved ice and refreshing alcoholic beverages, perfectly designed for a summer's day. This area will combine elements of design and comfort, incorporating mist systems, shaded lounges, and visual aesthetics to evoke a sense of coolness.
Moreover, participating shops within Harakado will implement the
'Hiyashi Oogiri', featuring chilled menu items, like cold noodles and special beverages. Additionally, select stores will partake in offering
Kao's rejuvenating cooling products to all customers, ensuring that everyone experiences comfort during their visits.
Engaging Events for All
The project also emphasizes community engagement with traditional Japanese culture through events like
“Hiyakadobon Odori”, a bon dance festival scheduled to take place on
July 27. This evening promises to be a wonderful cultural experience that invites residents, visitors, and workers in Harajuku to enjoy summer festivities together, irrespective of age or nationality.
One innovative idea in the project is the
'Hiyako Uchi Mizu', a traditional Japanese water-splashing method aimed at cooling down the hot pavement. Visitors can participate in this cultural revival while enjoying the breezy terrace environment.
Perspectives from Participants
Local business owners expressed their excitement and commitment to participating in this refreshing initiative.
Takako Ota, representing
Shikin Shouji, emphasized the importance of providing a comfortable atmosphere for visitors to experience the joy and vibrancy of Harajuku, even in high temperatures.
Tetsuya Chihara from
Lemon Life also shared his enthusiasm, noting how they've developed special products for this year's activities and are eager to continue promoting the area's cultural essence through this project.
The combined efforts culminate in a series of fun experiences designed not only for visitors but also recognizing the hard-working staff within Harajuku's various establishments. By installing cooling systems in kitchens and public areas, Harakado aims to support employees and enhance their working conditions throughout the summer.
Final Thoughts
The
'Harajuku -3°C Project' promises to redefine summer in this iconic Tokyo district by infusing a vibrant, cooling spirit into the bustling streets. With participation from community members and businesses, this initiative is set to create lasting memories for visitors while fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness in Harajuku.
