Shanghai Electric Achieves Milestone in Maritime Decarbonization with Biomethanol Bunkering

A Major Step in Maritime Decarbonization



In a pivotal move towards sustainable shipping, Shanghai Electric has successfully completed its initial large-scale biomethanol bunkering for the container vessel CMA CGM OSMIUM at Yangshan Port in Shanghai. This event took place in early March 2026 and highlights the company’s advancements in the realm of green hydrogen and next-generation fuel technologies.

The operation was a collaborative effort executed by the Shanghai International Port Group, which utilized a simultaneous loading and bunkering model. This innovative approach allowed for a seamless integration of cargo handling and fuel supply, exemplifying efficiency in maritime operations. The CMA CGM OSMIUM, a next-generation container ship that employs dual-fuel technology, was provided with biomethanol produced by Shanghai Electric, showcasing the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and solidifying its position within the global shipping industry.

The Taonan Project: A Game Changer



The biomethanol utilized during this bunkering event is sourced from Shanghai Electric's Taonan project, China's first large-scale commercial facility dedicated to biomethanol production. Situated in the western Jilin Province, this project leverages an abundance of wind, solar, and biomass resources, significantly contributing to the region's green energy landscape. The facility employs groundbreaking technologies, such as oxygen-blown pressurized biomass gasification, flexible hydrogen production powered by wind energy, and the synthesis of CO₂-rich syngas into biomethanol.

This holistic approach leads to a considerable decline in life cycle carbon emissions in comparison to conventional coal-based methanol. Hence, it presents a viable green fuel alternative for the international shipping sector and plays a critical role in achieving maritime decarbonization goals.

The integrated framework of green power, hydrogen, and biomethanol not only addresses the local need for renewable energy but also provides reliable, efficient, and sustainable low-carbon fuel for the shipping industry. Following systematic optimizations, the Taonan facility is now operational continuously, producing biomethanol that conforms to international marine fuel standards and has received the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU). The current output capacity is set at an impressive 50,000 tons annually, with plans for further expansion in the pipeline.
