The Launch of the Sports Boulevard Project in Riyadh
The Sports Boulevard project in Riyadh has officially commenced its first phase, signifying a significant milestone for the transformation of the city. Under the leadership of HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, this initiative is set to redefine urban living, encouraging a healthier and more vibrant lifestyle for residents and visitors alike.
Launched back on March 19, 2019, the Sports Boulevard project is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader vision for 2030, aiming to elevate the kingdom’s global status and improve the quality of life for its citizens. By developing this project, the Board of Directors of the Sports Boulevard Foundation aims to enhance Riyadh's livability while promoting social, physical, and mental well-being within the community.
Key Destinations Unveiled
The first phase includes five major destinations, which are:

With this opening, the total length of the project stands at 83 kilometers, currently achieving a completion rate of 40%. The initiative promises various facilities providing ample opportunities for outdoor sports and activities.
Wadi Hanifah: An Eco-Friendly Space
The first completed destination is Wadi Hanifah, a 13.4 km stretch that links the Al-Olab Dam in the north with Jeddah Road in the south through the Diriyah Gate. Here, visitors can enjoy pedestrian pathways, cycling and equestrian trails, and public green spaces integral for relaxation and sports alike. One of the iconic features is the Cyclist's Bridge that connects Wadi Hanifah to the Promenade, enhancing mobility across the area.
The Promenade: Revitalizing Urban Space
The Promenade spans 4 km and aligns with the urban design codes reflecting Salmani architecture principles. Crafted for both professional and casual cyclists, it includes diverse facilities like rest areas, lush green spaces, and an array of shops focused on outdoor activities, marking it as a central hub for community engagement.
Arts Tower: A Cultural Landmark
An architectural marvel, the Arts Tower, located at the intersection area, offers an aesthetic appeal inspired by the historic electricity towers. The vibrant geometric design interacts with sunlight, serving as a beloved photography spot for tourists and locals alike.
University Loop: Connecting Education and Community
The project’s internal loop track at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University facilitates a seamless experience for students and staff. Occupying 20 km, it incorporates dedicated paths for cyclists and pedestrians enhancing accessibility throughout the university's landscape.
Sands Sports Park: A Haven for Sports Enthusiasts
Sands Sports Park caters to various athletic activities ranging from cycling routes to BMX tracks. Extensive rehabilitation of local sand dunes showcases the commitment to integrating natural landscapes with recreational spaces, providing robust facilities for professional athletes and enthusiasts alike. The park will also include commercial spaces for long-term sustainability.
Future Developments
As this project's first phase opens its doors, the Sports Boulevard Foundation continues to work on additional areas of development. Included in the pipeline are enhancements across the Promenade, an Urban Wadi Destination, and various underpasses to improve traffic flow throughout Riyadh.
