On January 12, 2026, a landmark agreement was signed between Uniper Global Commodities SE and AM Green Ammonia India Private Limited, set to reshape the renewable energy landscape. This long-term offtake contract focuses on renewable ammonia, a sustainable fuel certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO). This agreement is the first of its kind for an Indian company and was signed in Ahmedabad by high-profile leaders including Uniper's CEO Michael Lewis and AM Green's founder Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Under the terms of this agreement, Uniper will purchase up to 500,000 tons of renewable ammonia per year from AM Green's green ammonia projects. The first deliveries are anticipated to begin in 2028, sourced from AM Green Ammonia's initial 1-million-ton-per-annum (MTPA) facility currently under construction in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. This contract signifies a crucial milestone in India's ambition to become a leading exporter of green hydrogen and ammonia, fully aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s National Hydrogen Mission.

He acknowledged the partnership's strength with investors such as Gentari, GIC, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), all of whom are part of creating an integrated ecosystem capable of reliably delivering green ammonia worldwide.

Looking ahead, John Roper, CEO of Uniper's Middle East operations, expressed pride in this groundbreaking agreement, which he described as a testament to the dedication and innovative spirit of the teams involved. This collaboration aligns supply, certification, and demand-side incentives, fostering the introduction of competitive renewable molecules into European industries, ultimately leading to substantial emissions reductions.

About AM Green and the Energy Sector's Future



AM Green Ammonia, formed in collaboration with the Greenko Group, Gentari, and ADIA, is working on multiple green ammonia plants in India. Their initial facility in Kakinada, with a capacity of 1 MTPA, has already begun construction following a critical final investment decision made in 2024. This site represents one of the world’s few large RFNBO-compliant green ammonia projects currently under construction, with significant progress, including the completion of major contracts and obtaining necessary permits. Upon full operationalization, it is expected to prevent approximately 2 million tons of CO2 emissions annually while creating over 600 jobs in the region.
