Shopify Reports 15x Increase in AI-Driven Orders in 2025

Shopify's Growth in AI-Driven Commerce

In a groundbreaking report, Shopify Japan, a leading name in global commerce, has announced an astonishing 15-fold increase in orders made via AI search from January 2025 to January 2026. This surge signifies a vital transformation in consumer purchasing behavior, moving away from traditional search and comparison methods to a more conversational AI-oriented process.

Recent data indicates that during the peak sale period from Black Friday to Cyber Monday (BFCM) going into the year-end shopping season, 51% of Japanese consumers plan to utilize AI for discovering products and deals. This finding underscores the rapid acceptance of AI in purchasing experiences, suggesting a significant shift towards technology-oriented shopping behaviors.

As commerce continues to evolve into a more autonomous and AI-driven experience, Shopify is taking significant strides in expanding its partnerships with leading AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI, and Gemini. These collaborations aim to create environments where users can complete purchases directly through conversational interfaces. Currently, this feature is in testing phases among select merchants in the United States, indicating a shift not only in product discovery but also in ensuring secure and consistent end-to-end transactions.

On the merchant side, the integration of AI is progressing rapidly. According to a survey conducted by Shopify in 2025, 92% of Shopify merchants in Japan reported integrating AI into their business operations, marking a notably high percentage in the APAC region. However, simply adopting AI tools is not sufficient for success. As the weight of decision-making in product discovery and purchases shifts towards AI-driven agent commerce, brands are urged to embrace the right tools and technologies to maintain visibility, reliability, and transaction capability.

As the age of AI unfolds, businesses will need to adapt to preserve these crucial aspects of commerce. The growth of agent commerce heightens the importance of concrete execution strategies, and in response, Shopify Japan will showcase its insights during the RetailTech Japan 2026, set to take place at Tokyo Big Sight from March 3 to 6, 2026.

On March 5, the Country Manager of Shopify Japan, Mitsuo Baba, will present a keynote address titled "Global Commerce Frontlines: Balancing Stability and Innovation in AI Commerce Infrastructure." The focus of this talk will be on three critical areas: streamlining operations through AI, responding to consumer behavior in the AI era, and ensuring high-security foundations that support sustained growth.

Additionally, attendees can look forward to hands-on demonstrations of the advanced AI assistant Sidekick, practical sessions by Shopify and its partners, and one-on-one consultations with Shopify specialists (with priority given to pre-registered guests). Those interested can register for the booth session via the dedicated sign-up page linked above.
