Ørsted Launches Major Battery Energy Storage Project in Texas



Ørsted, a pioneer in renewable energy, has recently announced the commencement of its Old 300 Storage project. This impressive battery energy storage system (BESS) is located in Needville, Texas, with a capacity of 250 MW and 500 MWh. This new installation has successfully integrated into the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid, marking a significant step in Ørsted's commitment to bolster energy solutions across the state.

The Old 300 Storage project is Ørsted's twelfth venture in Texas, further solidifying its status as a leading energy developer in the region. With the rise of renewable energy demands, battery storage has become essential for maintaining grid stability, especially during peak periods of electricity use. President of Ørsted Americas Onshore, Melissa Peterson, emphasized the project's importance. She noted that this energy storage system will provide essential services to ERCOT, thereby enhancing grid reliability and offering diverse energy options tailored to growing electricity demands.

This 250 MW storage project is strategically co-located alongside the Old 300 Solar facility, which has been operational since 2024, supplying power to approximately 80,000 homes and businesses in Texas. The collaborative efforts of these projects are not only improving the reliability of the grid but are also anticipated to generate around $110 million in local property tax revenue. This financial boost will significantly support essential community infrastructure, schools, and emergency services in the region.

A key highlight of the Old 300 Storage project is Ørsted's decision to source the storage technology from Tesla. The system incorporates Tesla’s advanced Megapacks, manufactured at the company’s Megafactory in Lathrop, California. These utility-scale battery systems have a proven record for safety and performance, having been deployed consistently across Texas and around the world.

Ørsted and Tesla have also collaborated closely with the Needville Fire Department to ensure comprehensive training on handling the battery technology and response protocols. This initiative is an essential part of Ørsted’s approach to prioritizing safety and risk management in all its projects.

Recent events have underscored the urgent need for energy storage solutions as they play a crucial role in mitigating high-demand alerts and energy conservation measures. The combination of the Old 300 Storage and Old 300 Solar is a prime example of a multi-faceted energy strategy aimed at tackling challenges posed by increasing energy demands. Together, they contribute towards a reliable and efficient energy landscape in Texas.
