At the prestigious IAA Transportation 2026 event held in Hanover, Germany, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) made a significant announcement regarding the future of commercial vehicle electrification. On September 14, 2026, CATL introduced its latest innovation, the TECTRANS II battery, marking a crucial milestone in the global transition towards more sustainable energy solutions for the commercial vehicle sector.
CATL's Executive President Akin Li expressed that commercial vehicle electrification represents what they consider the third wave of the global energy transition. He emphasized CATL's commitment to collaborating with global partners across various sectors, ensuring a robust ecosystem supporting this transformation.
Key Features of TECTRANS II
Modular Versatility
The TECTRANS II is designed as a modular platform capable of adapting to a wide range of commercial vehicle applications. It can be configured with varying numbers of standardized battery packs to meet diverse energy capacity and payload requirements, boasting a maximum driving range of up to 1,000 kilometers. This flexibility in technology routes allows for compatibility with both e-axle and central-drive architectures, alongside the capability for seamless switching between charging and battery swapping, thus catering to dynamic transport needs.
Improved Lifecycle Economics
The new platform promises substantial economic benefits throughout the entire lifecycle of commercial vehicles. For instance, by eliminating the necessity for specially developed battery systems for each vehicle type, TECTRANS II significantly reduces development costs and time to market. It is built to deliver higher energy density, achieving a gravimetric energy density of 170 Wh/kg, which is approximately 13% higher than the current market average. This advancement enables vehicles to carry additional payloads with the same battery capacity.
Furthermore, TECTRANS II can rapidly charge up to 80% in just 25 minutes using megawatt-level fast charging technology, thereby minimizing downtime, especially for long-haul routes. Its efficient design also translates to a remarkable 96% system round-trip efficiency, ensuring less energy is lost during charging and providing more usable energy for operations.
Emphasizing Safety and Reliability
In addition to its performance enhancements, TECTRANS II prioritizes safety and reliability, critical for commercial operations. It features robust physical protection elements, such as a hot-formed steel upper cover that withstands over 10,000 steps from heavy weights, and a high-strength enclosure designed to endure severe impact conditions. With a projected service life of 12 years and 1.5 million kilometers, the battery retains 70% capacity, thus supporting strong residual value for fleet assets.
Partnership for Green Freight Corridors
In conjunction with the product launch, CATL also announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DHL Group. This partnership aims to develop Green Freight Corridors across Europe, combining DHL's logistics know-how with CATL's battery technology. Through this collaboration, the companies intend to co-develop specially designed electric vehicles, thereby working towards more sustainable logistics solutions.
Zhu Lingbo, CTO of CATL Global Business Unit, stated that the transition to commercial vehicle electrification will unfold gradually over the coming decade.
