Celebrating 100 Years of Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum with Special Events

Celebrating a Century of Art: Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

In 2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, located in Ueno Park, will mark its centennial anniversary on May 1st. To commemorate this significant milestone, a special week of events dubbed the "100th Anniversary Week" will take place from April 28 to May 6, 2026. This anniversary not only celebrates its rich history as the first public art museum in Japan but also its ongoing role as a vital place for artists to exhibit their work and a hub for art enthusiasts to connect with masterpieces from around the world.

A Week Full of Activities

During the "100th Anniversary Week," visitors can look forward to a variety of activities. One of the highlights will be the outdoor installation known as the Anniversary Garden, which signifies harmony and prosperity through its colorful floral designs, rooted in traditional Japanese motifs. A special outdoor concert featuring a newly composed fanfare will also take place, performed by a group of trombonists.

The anniversary celebration kicks off with the opening of the "Andrew Wyeth Exhibition" on April 28, running until July 5. This exhibition is a retrospective of the renowned American realist painter Andrew Wyeth, showcasing nearly 100 works, including over ten that have never been displayed in Japan before. Wyeth's art reflects his deep connections with his surroundings, eschewing abstraction to depict intimate landscapes and figures, providing visitors a rare glimpse into his profound artistic world.

Special Events Planned

On May 1st, a special performance will be held as part of the anniversary celebrations. The concert will premiere the original composition "Fanfare from Afar" by Kengo Tokushige, known for his unique blend of sound and narrative. Two performances will be available on this day, bringing together talented trombonists to create an unforgettable auditory experience in the museum’s outdoor spaces. In a continuation of these musical celebrations, the re-run of "Ensemble from Afar" will delight audiences with its thoughtful orchestration.

As part of the week's activities, participants in a quiz rally can explore the museum while answering questions about its history and art. Those who complete the rally will receive medals and have the chance to win fun prizes from capsule toy machines. Moreover, the first 100 visitors at the Andrew Wyeth exhibition will receive exclusive original goods representing this landmark anniversary.

Culinary and Merchandise Highlights

Guests can also indulge in a culinary experience with a lineup of food trucks parked near the museum, offering delicacies such as lasagna, galettes, and more, perfect for a lovely day in the park. Additionally, the museum shop will be selling a variety of exclusive 100th-anniversary merchandise—including apparel like t-shirts and tote bags, as well as unique collaborations with local artists and businesses. Items will be available until March 2027 or until they run out.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the lush greenery of Ueno Park and enjoy this celebratory moment at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. For up-to-date information and event details, please visit the official website.
