Fidelis Care Maternal Health Grant Program
Fidelis Care, a prominent health plan serving over 2.4 million New Yorkers and a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, announced the launch of its annual maternal health grant program. This initiative, which commenced its application process on June 10, 2025, aims to support healthcare providers and community organizations across the state in enhancing postpartum care and addressing maternal mental health needs.
Grant Objectives
The grants are designed to fund innovative approaches in postpartum care and mental health services, particularly in underserved communities. Given that mental health complications significantly impact new mothers—an estimated one in five experiences conditions such as depression or anxiety—it is critical to improve access to these essential services. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the prevalence of mental health issues during and post-pregnancy necessitates ongoing support strategies.
Past data indicates an inconsistent attendance rate for postpartum healthcare visits in the U.S., averaging around 72%. Alarmingly, attendance rates drop to 43% among the most marginalized populations who are often served by Federally Qualified Health Centers. Research shows that having health insurance correlates positively with increased visits, which are crucial for assessing both physical wellbeing and mental health after childbirth.
Advocacy for Postpartum Care
Dr. Vincent Marchello, Chief Medical Officer of Fidelis Care, emphasized the urgency of recognizing postpartum care's importance, stating, "As a healthcare community, we must recognize that supporting mothers after childbirth is just as vital as caring for them during pregnancy." He noted that access to postpartum mental health services not only enhances the well-being of mothers but also contributes positively to families and communities overall.
The application for the maternal health grants is available at
fideliscare.org/maternal-grant, with a submission deadline set for July 8, 2025, at 5 p.m. Fidelis Care plans to announce grant recipients in August, highlighting innovative projects that align with their mission.
