BAUHAUS Partners with XYZ Robotics for Fully Automated Unloading and Sorting of Container Goods

Innovative Automation at BAUHAUS

In a significant move toward modernization, BAUHAUS, a leading European retailer in the home improvement sector, has announced its partnership with XYZ Robotics, a prominent innovator in mobile manipulation robots. This collaboration aims to introduce a fully automated system for unloading and sorting goods at BAUHAUS's central warehouse located in Krefeld, Germany.

The new automation solution harnesses the capabilities of the RockyOne and RockyOne SE robots, designed to streamline the entire process—from unloading shipping containers to assembling ready-to-stock pallets. This transformative approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also alleviates the physical demands placed on employees, allowing them to focus on more value-added tasks.

Tackling Logistics Complexity

BAUHAUS operates over 290 specialized retail centers across 19 countries, managing a high volume of goods daily—upwards of 10,000 distinct items. The complexity of their logistics operations, involving boxes of varying shapes, weights, and stacking requirements, poses challenges that traditional automation systems struggle to address.

To mitigate these challenges, the RockyOne robots autonomously navigate into shipping containers and expertly unload an array of assorted boxes. As cartons pass through the system, a real-time barcode scanning technology identifies each box for precise sorting. Following this, RockyOne SE compiles pallets based on customer-specific configurations, ensuring a stable output ready for warehousing.

Enhancing Warehouse Efficiency

Manual unloading has often been associated with strenuous physical labor, especially in cramped spaces and under extreme temperature conditions, leading to high employee turnover and a heightened risk of injury. By integrating the Rocky robots, BAUHAUS not only reduces physical strain on its employees but also simplifies daily operations, necessitating minimal training for staff to monitor the system via a user-friendly tablet interface.

"Since its launch, our system has operated reliably around the clock, seamlessly transitioning processes from container unloading to warehousing with zero manual intervention. This enables our intake team to focus on tasks that contribute directly to our value proposition," shared Torsten Winter, Vice President of Operations (Warehousing & Transport) at BAUHAUS AG.

Winter further expressed optimism about the future, noting, "We are already exploring additional applications for this technology within our logistics network. With XYZ Robotics, we have a dependable and forward-thinking partner guiding us along this transformative journey."

Expanding Horizons

Following the successful implementation in Krefeld, XYZ Robotics plans to expand its presence across Europe, aiming to support more warehousing and distribution operations. Local teams will provide ongoing support throughout the lifespan of the robotic solutions, ensuring that these innovations continue to yield benefits over time.
