Calling All Innovators: The 2025 Tokyo Renovation Contest

Are you ready to breathe new life into Tokyo's vacant homes? The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is excited to announce the launch of the "2025 Vacant House Renovation Contest." This initiative aims to transform the numerous vacant properties scattered across the city into valuable community resources. The contest encourages participants to submit their best renovation examples or innovative ideas for vacant houses.

Contest Overview

The 2025 Renovation Contest focuses on two specific categories:

1. Best Practice Category: This division is for proven renovation projects that have successfully transformed vacant houses. We invite owners, tenants, designers, and contractors to showcase their completed works.

2. Renovation Idea Category: This section welcomes creative proposals for future renovations of vacant homes. Participants are encouraged to think outside the box and present their visionary concepts.

Who Can Enter?

The contest is open to various stakeholders, including property owners, renters, designers, and construction professionals. However, please note that public organizations and government bodies are excluded from participation.

Awards

In each category, an outstanding project will be honored with a Grand Prize, alongside a Merit Award for one or two additional commendable entries. Winners will receive certificates and prizes, with their projects featured prominently on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's website and in promotional events.

Award Ceremony

Mark your calendars for February 17, 2025, when the awards will be presented. More detailed information about the ceremony will be available soon on the housing policy headquarters' website.

Application Process

The application period runs from October 30, 2023, through December 19, 2023. Don’t miss out, as the deadline is fast approaching!

Following the submission phase, a selection committee will conduct a preliminary review in early February, leading to the final evaluation during a public session on the award ceremony date.

Additional Support

Winning entries in the Renovation Idea Category that meet state-defined requirements may be eligible for financial assistance for renovation costs. Detailed information on subsidies will be provided in the "Tokyo Vacant House Potential Discovery Support Project" guidelines.
