Huawei Unveils Intelligent Substation Solution for Sub-Saharan Africa at Enlit Africa 2026

Huawei Unveils Intelligent Substation Solution for Sub-Saharan Africa

On May 20, Huawei hosted the Southern Africa Electric Power Summit as part of the prominent Enlit Africa 2026 forum, focusing on energy supply, water management, and the overall energy industry. The summit's theme was "Building Future Energy Systems: Unlocking Rapid Growth with Digital Intelligence," attracting industry leaders and partners, including prominent organizations like Eskom from South Africa, BPA from Ghana, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE).

During the summit, Huawei showcased its Intelligent Substation Solution tailored for Sub-Saharan African nations, designed to accelerate the digital transformation of the region's energy sector. The presentation emphasized the urgent need for the energy industry to evolve and adapt to new technological standards.

Wang Guoyu, Huawei's Vice President for Power Digitalization, delivered a keynote speech titled "Developing Universal Artificial Intelligence: Empowering Future Energy Systems." He emphasized that consumer-centric models are emerging as a new paradigm for the energy transition, marking a critical transformation phase towards Artificial Intelligence (AI). The significance of communication technologies, digitalization, and AI was underscored as being vital in redefining the core energy systems. Wang stated that AI and digital technologies are pivotal in transforming the entire value chain of electricity production, from generation and transmission to distribution. Huawei remains committed to enhancing AI capabilities and reliable communication technologies to assist African utilities in their transition to advanced stages of AI development.

In collaboration with CIGRE and Zhuhai Unitech Power Technology Co., Ltd., Huawei introduced an intelligent substation solution specifically designed for the Sub-Saharan region, underscoring the company's commitment to modernizing substations across the continent through strategic partnerships.

Representatives from various African utility companies provided insights on this innovative solution. One representative noted, "This solution integrates smart video, AI algorithms, and secure wireless networks to replace four critical manual operations—monitoring, inspection, meter reading, and analysis—with intelligent automation." Such advancements enable operational staff at substations to conduct remote monitoring across entire stations, drastically reducing inspection time from several days to just minutes and decreasing operation and maintenance costs by an impressive 70%. "Our partnership with Huawei has allowed us to perform comprehensive digital probing of transmission networks for the first time, transitioning from reactive repairs to proactive maintenance."

Following the summit, a roundtable discussion was held by Huawei, CIGRE, and the 450 MHz Alliance focusing on private wireless networks and telecommunications networks. Gösta Kallner, Executive Chairman of the 450 MHz Alliance, emphasized that a private wireless network constructed on the 450 MHz frequency has become fundamental for ensuring reliable and resilient network operations with wide coverage, a diverse ecosystem, and readiness for future developments.

A representative from CIGRE highlighted the importance of a unified technological foundation and the exchange of global best practices in accelerating the digital transformation of electric grids internationally. All participants acknowledged the critical need to develop a pervasive, secure, and efficient communication infrastructure for the energy sector, which is essential for supporting new energy systems and achieving sustainable energy development across Africa.
